Problems with CD/DVD Writing, Roxio, and Windows XP

Recommended Posts

This is driving me nuts. I got a Pacific Digital DVD_RW drive (based on an NEC 1300A) which came bundled with Roxio's Easy CD/DVD Creator, as well as their drag-and-drop progrm. It's been nothing but trouble. The computer can read data just fine, but Easy CD Creator locks up just as its about to begin recording. Same thing with Wavelab, Vegas, and CD Architect. BUT using the XP routine works fine, you can drag files to it and record without problems.

Sequoia, which is supposed to be compatible with the ND-1300A, returns an error as well; when I run the Roxio assistant, it gives a Ret:TBL error.

Because the Windows routine works, I know the drive is physically okay. So it has to be some kind of system thing. I updated the drive's firmware, all the related software, and even the software I want to use with the drive. Any ideas? This is driving me nuts.

What other kinds of Burning applications do you have installed (including ANYTHING that burns a disc)?

I gave up on Roxio on Windows a long time ago... it seems to conflict with any other type of burning software. Does Wavelab have a built in burning program?

Yes it does, but it's not working either. Nor Samplitude/Sequoia. When I replace the DVD drive with a Plextor drive, Samplitude and Sequoia work just fine, but Wavelab doesn't...there's SOMETHING going on in my system or software or...?

I have Roxio with my HP DVD drive on WinXP and it's running fine (on a Compaq Presario). Dunno what the problem is, but it's likely not intrinsic to Roxio.

I had the same problem once and solved it by disconnecting from the internet. I have no clue why that worked but as soon as I was online and tried to burn a cd something weird happened. When I disconnected,...problems were gone.

I don;'t expect this to help you Craig but you can allways give it a try.

First, if Roxio has installed any type of packet writing app like DirectCD then Id disable or uninstall it. This can conflict with XPs built-in packet writing service. Also, have you tried putting the DVD-RW drive on its own IDE channel set to master?

Either Roxio or cd creator I ain't sure which glitched it's way right offen my machines.

I run win98se and it DID NOT like something on my machine.IT worked for a while well enough and then went glitchey on me..

As soon as I deleted all files and drivers and replaced the drivers with NERO SIX drivers and the NERO program .. all is tidy now.

NERO is the shiznit for po' boys like me.. thanks for lettin' me share..

Craig, don't know if this is of much help but it seems you are not the only one having these problems:

Maybe it could be a conflicting ASPI layer. For more info:

Concerning Wavelab I found these links pointing to ASPI layer problems:

Lastly, total shot in the dark, try disabling IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service:

Hope you solve the problem soon,

I thought the same thing Steelandre. Since it's spread across multiple apps, the ASPI layer should be reinstalled or replaced. I thought Wavelab came with it's own ASPI drivers that were optional installs. They work great for me.

yeah what he said.

the biggest issue with Roxio is that stupid Direct CD nonsense. it was an issue long before XP.

Craig your going to have to clean out your registry of any hint of direct cd its as bad as AOL or worse.

do a search in your registry for roxio, ez-cd.

you might get lucky and not have to re-install windoz.

make sure you un-install thru program manager first.

I use Easy CD Creator 5 (with some updates 5.3.5 I think) for my DVD writing (data) and didn't go to Easy CD Creator 6 because the reports said it just killed everything - that was a year or so ago.

To write DVDs I can watch I use DVD Architect by Sony. It's a firewire Cendyne DVD drive. I'm on Win XP & Pentium 4.

Hope you get stable quick !

I uninstalled through program manager. I'm skittish about editing the registry, through. What's safe to delete and what isn't? I did delete the keys for the Veritas "direct CD" stuff installed by a previous program.

I assume if I go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and go to "software," I can delete any Roxio folder...right?

Meanwhile, I've downloaded the Nero 6 trial version. We'll see if it works despite any chaos Roxio may have caused...

This might explain why that software is giving problems:

"Roxio is a longstanding Microsoft partner, which CD burning technology is used in Windows XP."

http://www.microsoftmonitor.com/archives/000765.html

Joking aside, if you do uninstall Roxio read this too:

uninstall Easy CD Creator 6 using the RoxiZap Utility

When I upgraded to XP a lot of my programs wouldn't work right, so they have to be upgraded too. CD Creator was one of them.

So here's what I'm running now, and everything is working good.

A new Lite-On CD/DVD player/recorder.

Sonic's MyDVD recording software, comes with Record Now 6.7 for cd and data burning, and Sonic's Cine DVD player.

Adobe's Audition 1.5 has a new intergrated CD burner in the program.

WinDVD Platinum 5 with Audio Pack upgrades for 5.1 24/96 playback for dvd's.

Windows Media Player 9 and Real One free version.

Photo Suite III for editing photo's.

All on a fresh install and don't need much else.

More data...

I downloaded the Nero demo, and it didn't work. So I reinstalled the Plextor drive; Wavelab, Sequoia, etc. worked, and so did the Roxio software.

At this point I'm beginning to think the drive is defective and so is Pacific Digital. I'm going to go for an RMA number tomorrow. Meanwhile, I've learned a helluva lot...

in the registry under edit you can do a "find"

tpye in what your looking for and it will locate it thru the whole registry.

then click find next until it say finishes searching.

you can delete anything that say roxio or ez-cd

with Samp/Sequoia there are a few drives it has issues with. (thier list of drives it supports are not up to date)

both Nero and roxio should have updates to support newer drives. (i am assuming you downloaded the latest Nero 6)

sounds like you may have a bad drive.

Craig,

If you haven't already sent back the drive, it might be worth looking on the web to see if they have a firmware update for the drive.

FWIW, Pacific Digital stuff is, let's say, somewhat less than stellar in quality, IMHO.

The other guys are right on the mark about software; Roxio, regardless of version, seems to causes a LOT of problems.

But I've never heard anything bad about Nero; it's the only one I use. It even has a track arranger for laying out audio CDs with crossfades between tunes like CD Architect.

Thanks for the tips...I already updated the firmware. The Pacific Digital drive is based on an NEC mechanism; any idea which company makes better mechanisms? I think that's the crucial point, not whose company logo is on the box.

When I figure this thing out I'll bump it...latest is that PD sent me a form to return it for repair.

Not sure who makes the Plextor mechanism (maybe they do themselves) but I have a Plextor PX 708 and it's a fantastic machine.
