Non-music related posts

Recommended Posts

Is it "allowed" or "okay" with you guys to create threads about subjects that don't necessarily seem music related? Because I've done it before and I have no intention of stopping unless you tell me otherwise. Just wanting to know, since this is a "general" and not one of those "grouped by subject" forums. For instance, I started one recently on DUI. I have other things I'd like to hear from others on here. As I've said before, you do come to trust the opinions of people on forums, even though you've never actually met them in person.

Well the Forum is under MusicPlayer - not sure if there's any hidden clue in that or not - and then there's the Sound, Studio, and Stage Forum name and the the "Open Mic" description. So go to your favorite Open Mic venue, sign up, then walk up to the mic and start up a rant on your favorite non-music ideas - get back to us and let us know how it goes. Maybe Craig should change the name of the Forum, or make a "break-room" Forum like some other boards have for OT subjects.

I always highlight and copy the text to the Clipboard in case Windows crashes.

Majority rules. If you guys don't like it, I'll stop. The internet is an evolving medium and forums such as this are becoming "communities." This is a general forum and there are no subcategories. Your break room idea might be a good idea. Not sure. If musicians (or any group of people) gather together for any reason, wherever, they are going to talk about everything under the sun; that's basically my position. That it's great to be able to talk about whatever with people you trust or "like" because you have common interests. Although, I do understand your position. I could have gone around and found a DUI forum. Or a forum on morality or government or sociology or whatever... but I wouldn't know those people and the responses wouldn't be as meaningful as those from people on here that I "know."

someone asked this question recently and the response was that (like stevepow mentioned) Craig's SSS includes the description "Open Mic". intelligent non-music conversations about anything (including non-music conversations) are accepted. sometimes people put "OT:" before their off-topic posts. i used to think it meant "Old Testament", but it means "Off-Topic".

Okay...lessee if it will take my post this time. Music is that which is a reflection of everything that shapes our lives...our loves, beliefs, triumphs and tragedies, and that which makes us laugh. That said, there is no such thing as a non-musical topic here..everything that is posted (within bounds of reason) is related to that which shapes the lives of the friends here on the board, who happen to be musicians and audio folks. And I would think it incredibly shallow to limit discussions to "which mic pre is best" when there are greater forces beyond our control at work. And I am incredibly thankful that our moderators here don't play "topic gestapo". That gets old really quick. Now, that's not to say that if I was to come on board and ask out of the blue what caliber rifle is better for Moose hunting in Canada, I think that that would definitely belong on a hunting forum. Way off line here, unless you happen to be talking to Ted Nugent. But I've yet to see anything really that really strays too far off into the weeds. We're friends, who happen to be musicians. And one has the vital option of skipping over threads that don't interest them...

This might be a good time to restate my philosophy concerning this board. The way I see it, it's a giant party, and it's being held at my house. Like any party, people tend to congregate in groups (threads) and discuss particular topics. These cover a wide variety of subjects. We've had some remarkably intelligent political discussions, threads about censorship, and so on. And of course, at a party, people will talk shop...a lot. It's pretty easy to tell which topics are not music-related from the title. Some of them are great for comic relief, something that's not too bad to have around either. Also, forums like this have a natural ebb and flow. It's just before NAMM, AES was smaller than usual, and the record biz is in contraction, so there aren't any amazing hot musical topics to talk about right now. However, bear in mind that you are guests at my party, so if anyone gets drunk and barfs on the rug, you will be politely shown the door. Use common sense in what you decide to post about, and all will be well.

... and come to think of it, DUI is somewhat music-related...once I started playing bars and saw what went out on to the roads at 2 AM, I started driving even more carefully than usual around that time!!

Actually, if one makes the prerequisite that the *poster* be a musician, then it's always going to be obliquely music-related... .... Just don't let Rush Limbaugh come in here. (man, I just made the funniest typo involving leaving off a letter at the end of a sentence...

GOOD HEAVENS RUSH...USE A CONDOM...HAHAHAHA There's a guy at my work who listens to Limbaugh through headphones all the time. One time another younger guy asked him what he was listening to and he said "Rush"...and the guy asked him, "What CD? 2112 is my favorite"... HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Hey Craig...Dorito and beer run, dude, I'll buy this time. I need some extra hot salsa.

<> Speaking of beer, Freddy Heineken died last night. A terrible loss, but it gives me an excuse to hoist one in his memory. On a related subject, hot tip for Mexican beer fans: grab your Noche Buena quick before the season's supply is gone!
