Mac Mini as a home studio hub

Recommended Posts

My 2010 Macpro is getting old. I'm looking into a replacement. (So is my 11 year old Apogee Ensemble for that matter).

Is anyone using a Mac Mini as their main studio computer? My needs are only moderate. I don't crunch heavy video, though I chop up the odd movie in Final Cut. I'm primarily using it for audio with Logic Pro. And my Logic use isn't the 30 track variety either.

Either way it seems like the Mini should have enough firepower and a good amount of ports (unlike the Macbookpro).

Am I missing something? Obviously I'll need to get a display but those can be had for a couple hundred bucks.

I had a 2011 Mac Mini Server (2 hard drives), 16G RAM, quad i7, put a 500G SSD in it - machine runs quite fast. I donated that particular machine to my church (still have the 2011MBP)

Apple made the Mini with i3, i5, and i7 some dual core, some quad core. Officially supports 8GB of RAM, but a 16GB kit works. Running High Sierra (2011 won't run the latest OS).

My main use for the computer was becoming familiar with Mac OS, but I did have MainStage on it.

The audio USB problems has been solved in Mojave 10.14.4, that introduce audio problems in 2009 Mac Pro based on 55xx CPUs :-<

(that are no more supported).

On VI control, there are a few threads on the new Mac Mini, and people seems very happy with the 6core model.
