The Thelonious Monk Institute Of Jazz Is Now The Herbie Hancock Institute Of Jazz

The change was announced today by the organization's Board of Trustees. A press statement noted that the decision had been unanimous, and was made "following a request by representatives of the Monk Estate regarding the continued use of Thelonious Monk's name."

Hancock, 78, has served as the organization's board chairman for the last 15 years. A pianist, composer-bandleader and 14-time Grammy winner, he recused himself from voting on the matter.

I find it a bit odd that the Estate didn't want Monk's name on it anymore, and I haven't come across anything more specific as to why. But Herbie seems like the right choice considering what he's done for the place and more generally, what he's done. :thu:

On Twitter, Ethan Iverson speculated that it was related to a trademark dispute between the Monk estate and North Coast Brewing. Apparently the Monk estate only authorized the use of Monks name and likeness for Brother Thelonious ale, and not for additional merchandise. There was also a dispute about profits from the sales going to the Monk Institute only as opposed to the brewery profiting off the merchandise sales:

As the Forbes article indicates, apparently the agreement was verbal only and now in dispute, and the estate has to protect their trademark/Monks name in order to keep control of it. Iverson thinks its okay for the institute to be named after Herbie. Interesting that in that Twitter thread Iverson also talks about the strangeness of jazz competitions, and how he recently was an early round judge for the Monk piano competition. Im catching a show tonight featuring a former second place vocal winner, Veronica Swift, and former third place piano winner, Emmet Cohen.

I saw T.S. Monk perform a long time ago; its not surprising to me that as administrator of the estate hes trying to protect rights to Monks name for the benefit of the family.

I saw that the beer was no longer available (via Josh Paxton on FB) and wondered if the two were related somehow. The odd part is, if the Estate gets the case resolved with North Coast, where will the profits go now?

I do agree with Iverson that Herbie is a much more appropriate figure than Monk to name the institute after. Nothing against Monk, of course.

Also, to reiterate what I said on FB, I would like to give both the brewery and the Monk family the benefit of the doubt that they're acting in good faith, and that this is a genuine misunderstanding that can be resolved. But if it turned out that the family was disappointingly filing a baseless claim as a shameless act of money-grubbing, they would hardly be the first descendants of a music legend to do so. *cough* Marvin Gays *cough*

If you guys ever feel that Keyboard Corner should be renamed Zephonic's Corner of Keyboard Wisdom, I will humbly and reluctantly accept the honor.

But I don't drink beer.

Name this place after you???

:poke:;)
