MIDI Looper for live improvisation?

Is there such a thing?

It would be cool if you could do midi looping with your live rig, the way that some of us do with audio loops. Capture a motif, set it to loop or retrigger it later. Ideally the record button would always be on, just like skip-back sampling. Being midi, once captured, you could move a motif between elements in your rig (i.e. re-channelize) . Perhaps being MIDI you could also perform tempo and pitch modulations/variations on it.

Pigtronix Infinity Looper. I have one and it's fantastic

Ah, you don't mean the ability to have midi start stop, but capturing midi data and looping it? Really, Ableton Live is the go to for that kind of stuff. I use a Pigtronix with an MPC slaved. It recognises start stop and is rock solid on timing.

May not fit all your requirements, but Mobius vst from Circular Labs is free and it scratched my itch. Saved me from buying the Roland pedal.

9 Moog things, 3 Roland things, 2 Hammond things and a computer with stuff on it

That's a nice little find, Thomann is a great place for that kind of specialist stuff.

The problem with using loopers in a band is finding a drummer who will work to click this side of a bar gig. Local music scene here could be so much more if drummers were more inclined to work with click. It wouldn't be working to backing tracks, so you'd still have spontaniety but with on the fly looping, Certainly this kind of device would allow a lot of 80s stuff to happen if you weren't willing/unable to use Ableton Live onstage.

Ive got one built into my Strymon Timeline.

Check out YTube and see if it fits your needs.

Im using the buttons on my K4 the hit play, stop, etc.

Works best for me if I play the first 4 or 8 bars hit stop and jam.

Sounds best after the delay (post)

You get 30 seconds worth of Record & Overdub.

Lots of fun and comes with the best Delays for synths you can get.

Use to have the Oberheim Echoplex.

If you want to get really deep those hold lots of licks, and you dont need your phone, iPad, PC laptop, etc,

Works really good with reverse if you want that type of sound.

The Swell Delay w/ Reverse sounds like have you ever been experienced quality by Hendrix.

Not opposed to ableton. It's been years since I've used it. My recollection was that it worked fine if all your triggers were on down beats. The might have opened up the architecture since then. I'll take a second look. Thanks. :thu:

...The problem with using loopers....

Is they are boring and repetitive!

It's just a tool. Boring people make boring music regardless of the tool. You don't need a looper to be repetitive.

Check this out.

Here's another one by Kawehi doing a cover of NIN Closer (NSFW) looks like using something like a launch pad with presumably Ableton Live:

I'm not sure what impresses me more here: her talent or her mastery over duct tape.

It's not quite the application the OP was asking about, but the jazz singer Cyrille Aimee performs frequent duets with her buddy, Rupert the Looper. Here's one:

To make it work, you need a tune with a chord structure that accommodates the looper's limitations, but I dig the idea of making something beautiful within those constraints.
