Mark Schmieder
I started a thread on it a couple of years ago when I bought mine. I already have a custom shop Les Paul so only needed a P90 guitar, and I like that it also has a trapeze tailpiece. The higher-end models are better still, but more typical of a humbucker Les Paul and that wasn't what I personally needed, but I highly recommend them to people who don't yet have an LP. And I wish the P90 model was made in a higher-end version; I would buy it in a flash. Great necks on these. I sold my Pacifica because the neck was too narrow for my tastes, but this one is wider. Good fit and finish, and even the cheapest model in the line (ceramic) has great pickups. These were sleepers initially, in the USA (they were an immediate hit overseas) but have picked up steam and are now doing fairly well here. The slightly revised models from last year mostly change the paint choices as I recall. They only come with a gig bag, but Yamaha's bags are very deeply padded and have lots of pockets. maybe the high end models come with cases? Most of the models have a push/pull on one knob, which does something different on several of the models (including mine). One or two are Gretsch-like with Bigsby pickups and mini-humbuckers as well. Dannyalcatraz
Revstars are one of the Yamaha guitars hugest on my list. I kinda put them in the same category as Reverend guitars, and I have 5 of those... Quote Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. desertbluesman
Just picked one up, pleasantly surprised how it plays/feels. Any love for these? It is an excellent looking guitar, I like to looks of it and I like the full hum-bucking pups, and I absolutely like the controls placement. Best of luck with it and have many years of playing pleasure with it. Also Tune-o-matic bridge, and stop tail piece. Whats mot to like? picker
They look kinda plain-jane to me, not to say that's a bad thing, necessarily. I would like to hear the one with P90s. Caevan O’Shite
...I absolutely like the controls placement. Dig! The volume-knob location is just about perfect. An improvement on the usual placement found on most Gibson and Gibson-esque axes. Mark Schmieder
Yeah, I said LP because that to me is the reference for two-pickup short-scale solid body humbucking guitars. I prefer single-coils and feel they have way more variation between them than humbuckers do. So that's my bias coming through. But really, I do think these kind of fall in between an SG and an LP with some legacy Yamaha models thrown in for good measure. skipclone 1
I have only tried the Pacificas-no complaints but, not enough impact to drop what I have now. Most likely Yamaha will be at the Music instrument Fair on the 20th, I`ll see if I can find one. Usually I end up throwing on headphones and playing their Silent Guitar. CEB
I've been playing Yamaha electrics for about a year or two now. No complaints. You definitely need to check them out on a piece by piece basis. I have a couple of 600 series Pacificas I use out. Same exact electronics and same exact body/hardware specs but they sound different. My favorite has a little more heft and feel more dense and sounds better. Both are fine and acceptable working guitars though. Yamaha does a nice job of actually giving you more/better guitar as you go up in price/series. Not like Fender. My experience with Fender has been that a jump in price/grade doesn't necessarily mean a better guitar. Sometimes you find low price gems that out perform higher priced models .... Fender is sort of random sometimes. Quote "It doesn't have to be difficult to be cool" - Mitch Towne "A great musician can bring tears to your eyes!!! CEB
FYI - For you guys that buy online. I've played all the Revstars. I like them. I would a P90 model. But there is a really cool battleship gray textured finish. Looks killer out of the box but it show fingerprints and smudges like crazy...... If appearance is important to you it is hard to keep that particular guitar looking good. p90jr
I think these were designed with the present love of all things retro in mind, and in focusing that back a bit to Yamaha models of the past, and I think we all see a bit of Reverend in there even if accidental... but a big inspiration for them was Yamaha motorcycles of the 60s and 70s. Very cool. They make great instruments, and I'm glad people are rediscovering them. I would buy one, though I've made a blood oath to not buy anymore gear!!! I still have the Yamaha SC400 I saved up and bought new when I was 13, and it's still killer, though it seems to have gotten smaller over the years and looks a bit funny on my frame, now... funny how guitars shrink like that over the years...
