desertbluesman
Unquestionably in my mind (for my personal taste) is Crossroads by The Cream on the Wheels Of Fire album. The back story to that is; I was riding to a friends house in the back seat of a car when my buddy the late great Jay Suhm took out this baggie with some red, and white, and blue pills (only one color per each pill) with a peace sign on one side and he says wanna do some "Owsley"? So I says WTF is an Owsley? And he explained it. "it is LSD" he says to me. So he looked at me and I looked at him and he says I only have 3 of them, do one or I am gonna pop all three. So I do one. We rode for another 3/4ths of an hour and I was beginning to "peek" on the acid & we get to our friends house and I am sitting in a corner seeing shit I never saw before, oscillating between wonder and panic emotionally. Then Jay sneaks up behind me and claps on the headphones and on it is Crosssroads playing at ear splitting volume. I never heard music in that way. That day I went from being a Motown fan, to a hard rock fan in one five minute tune. Next day I went out and bought a guitar. And started playing immediately. The only version I like as my very favorite live recording is the one linked below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xunvM1rknH8 Quote dbm If it sounds good, it is good !! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=143231&content=music

Larryz
Too many live performances to choose from but I'll just throw in one of my favorite live albums. A double album set recorded live on stage by Loggins and Messina. A great live recording with great original material by a couple of great artists: [video:youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7NCPLRXOzc Quote Take care, Larryz

desertbluesman
I second the Allman Brothers Live At The Fillmore as my favorite live album, Although no single cut on it rivals Crossroads for me. I also wore out a Loggings and Messina On Stage album several times back in the day. (Same with Live At Leeds). Although no single cut on either one rivals Crossroads for me. bbqbob
The above suggestions are great especially the Allman Bros "Live at the Fillmore East. I love a number of live albums and am partial to the Dead's Europe '72. What I am amazed at is Poco's DeLIVErin never seems to make anyone's list of favorite live recordings. It an incredible example of a tight band at the peak of their powers. It was recorded before Jim Messina left the band. It might be my favorite live recording. Here is a taste from the album of a nice medley of 3 great songs:

Danzilla
Lots of great live albums out there; some even from the 21st century. Some of my personal favorites: Jars of Clay: Furthermore One disc is "live in the studio" acoustic versions, and the second disc is full band concert. Porcupine Tree: Octane Twisted Petra: Farewell is always a good listen I own a lot of live Marillion material. Their latest, recorded at Royal Albert Hall this time last year, may be the finest. "All One Tonight" Joe Bonamassa also has a ton of live albums. While his Red Rocks and Royal Albert Hall discs have full band & horns, I'm still partial to A New Day Yesterday, done with just a trio. Whitefang "The Last Waltz"? Nah, don't think so. "The Last Waltz" was a gathering of performers for when The Band was beaking up( and filmed by Martin Scorsese) . What I'M talking about was an LP of various late '60's artists performing at the closing of the Fillmore West, I think,,,,,, It included a recording of a freshly "just gone solo" BOZ SCAGGS playing "Baby's Calling Me Home". Came out either in late '71, or early '72? I heard my buddy's copy in about mid '72. Whitefang Quote I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! whitefang
OK, I'll "up" the ante a bit. The recordings of the nine Beethoven symphonies recorded by the Vienna symphony orchestra w/LEONARD BERNSTEIN conducting(1980) are, to my knowledge, live recordings. Of course, they would be my favorite recordings, regardless live or not. Whitefang Quote I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! d halfnote
Band of Gypsies! Almost went w/that myself. This is the sort of question which's answer seems to me variable on a day-to-day basis. There are so many options & how can one have only a single iconic fave ?! :idk Even if we draw back to only guitarists the list is great... Charlie Christian, Les Paul (w/or/w/out Frettin' Chet A), the Who, John Dawson Winter 3rd's Progressive Blues Experiment, one of Zappa';s many (such as ) or our man Jim, represented possibly by the Monterey Pop album he split w/ Otis Redding fronting the MGs (featuring, of course, the masterful Steve Cropper) + other options like the Woodstock alb ("Vilanova Junction", anyone ?)... ...but as I was reviewing the options I remembered this clip, which, while not an alb, leads me to posit not just my fave live music but maybe the best Hendrix live music. Not only does it showcase JH's skills but it does so in a way that none of his other works do: acoustic rather than electric, no band or other instruments, no flash showmanship, just his masterfully expressive playing & composing + his honest personal connection to the listener. [video:youtube] [Note: while the vid freezes for a moment, it's followed by a secret clip of JH playing acoustic gtr in another offstage situation---don't miss it !] Quote d=halfnote
