Drilled in the brain by country (Alison Krauss & Union Station)

Recommended Posts

OK, I am not a fan of country music in general, although I certainly can appreciate the musicianship and heart present in good country, but that holds true for me in any genre. But country never really caught on with my brain.

Until I heard this lady and the smokin' band she plays with:

The chops and the voice! Wow. I know I'm late in the game for this one, but I am certainly a fan. If you like tightly crafted songs that really reveal themselves after about 5 or 6 listens, this is the band to listen to. Believe me, I am not a bluegrass kinda guy...I'm listening to Mudvayne as I write this...but this group is awesome.

"For instance" is not proof.

No doubt!

I worked with her drummer at a gig for an unknown female country singer. He came in early at the tiny bar I was mixing at, apologised for the setup of his drums. He drums with brushes most of the time with Union Station and sets up the kit to sound full under the light touch. He was afraid it would sound bad with sticks for this one-off gig. Couldn't have been more wrong. The kit was full bodied, but not overpowering. I should have been so lucky most nights! ;)

It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman

Alison Krauss "Now That I've Found You". Nice rendition of that old song, but the one that really kicks ass for me is "Oh Atlanta" on the same CD. Starts out nice and soft and by the end of the song she's got me hooked. Kickin' ass with no screamin' electric guitars! Musical and technical excellence!

I cannot stand most newer country. AK is an exception. Smoking band, voice, everything.

so agreed on all counts.

and yeah, the engineering on New Favorite is amazing...in part because it shines a light on the performances without calling attention to itself in a way that diminishes them.

Alisons lack of vibrato drives my mom crazy...myself, I just hear this honey-toned songbird! ;)

cheers,

Go tell someone you love that you love them.

Alison Krauss + Union Station put out a live DVD about a year ago. The quality of both the disc and the performance is phenominal.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Alison briefly while I was in Nashville a few weeks ago. I don't think I've ever met a more charmingly goofy woman in my life. She was also very genuine and open both about her life and her music.

Allison rules!!!

The tracks for Cold Mountain etc.

Vibrato is for Stevie Nicks fans...Dolly Parton etc...

Thank GOD someone sings it straight up.

Country has gone rockers, the latest Chesny proves that.

I do like the bass playing on Chesny's record though (I hear it cut through even after power compression in the car stereo).

There are some traditionalist leanings going on but much of what's left of country genre in Nashville, is managed by folks who grew up listening to rock, so go figure.

One session player likened it to hearing Rolling Stone riffs, with a steel guitar bed. he was referring to a certain high octane Male Duo.

Lets face it, the quartet bands from Nashville right now, sure sound like the Eagles all wound up on homespun and pone.

I suspect, that pendulum will begin to swing back to the middle soon.

Guessin' and wishful I suppose.

Pete Anderson's new act, Moot Davis is the real deal, (Little Dog Records) but Pete's from L. A. and that's always been a problem unless, the talent came through the front doors of the affiliate publisher.

Allison, your aim is true...

I have that one, it's called Alison Krauss and Union Station Live at the Louisville Palace in Louisville, KY. It's more than tasty, it's totally awesome. The recording quality is among the best I have ever heard. And indeed, Jerry Douglas' playing is breathtaking. Get it, you won't regret it !

This doesn't surprise me. I'm pretty sick of oldies. I've heard these songs all my life.

I like jazz and jazz/rock, mostly. But quite a few of my friends have gone acoustic. Many of them are playing bluegrass. I like it. It's a nice change.

My daughter is playing Nickel Creek tunes, among others. I was listening to the songs on her MP3 player last night. She came into the studio and asked me what I was doing - as if to say "But you don't like bluegrass, you like jazz!" Unfortunately, she took her MP3 player back to her room and I'm left with my old stuff.

The radio stations here are pretty predictable - they all play the 'safe bet'. In order to hear new music I have to tune to the college stations or go online. Lately, that's what I've been doing. Also, I'm noticing more and more cars in the parking lot at work have antennas for satellite radio. Very cool!

 Bob ! Glad you like it. It's pretty amazing how many (musician) friends of mine who were not into bluegrass at all, bought the DVD after I played it for them. :D

Enjoy ! :thu:

I'm not much of a country fan, and my bluegrass listening mostly consists of the bluegrass that I play for fun, but Alison Krauss' voice is beyond beautiful, and Union Station is definitely smokin'.
**Standard Disclaimer** Ya gotta watch da Ouizel, as he often posts complete and utter BS. In this case however, He just might be right. Eagles may soar, but Ouizels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Hmm. A singer who can hold true pitch without resorting to vibrato. :thu: Thank God someone can do it. To me, that's one of the measures of true singing talent. Gimme 8 counts on a long note before you start gently using the vibrato, please.

Agreed...AK&US are amazing. Like, that "make you cry" kind of amazing.
