J. Dan
Of course we all love playing music and have fun doing it. But a lot of the fun for me comes just with hanging out with my band mates before and after gigs and during breaks. Then there are some of e funny and memorable things that happen during gigs. Last night was one of those nights. I literally had tears rolling down my face I was laughing so hard, and in the car driving back home today I couldn't help but start laughing. First a little set up. This gig was 2 hours south of St. Louis at a camp ground next to a river where people go on float trips. The campground built a good sized stage with a tin roof, but it's on stilts so you're 10 feet over everybody's heads in the crowd. Our Production Manager/Sound Guy bought a really nice drone that shoots 4K video and even has the FAA license to do things like survey buildings for money, etc., and decided to use it to get some shots of the band. He shot some video during the 2nd set, then during break told us he couldn't get good shots of the drummer, so step aside at some point during the 3rd set so he can fly it in and get the drummer. Now a little background on our singer. He's a really nice and funny guy, but he's also a bit of a bad@ss - he teaches Brazillian Jujitsu for a living, rides a Harley, belongs to a "club". Well, poor guy was rocking out and didn't see the drone approaching. I can't stop watching this drone video (it's Facebook, so I can't embed here) https://www.facebook.com/stephen.kremer.54/videos/10214730248921319/?hc_ref=ARRINlOdWocrLPEsahkFLKYFJ0Vyhg6SgSiOLivuHP4JDlBBrQ58WKiaexNzULaLzuo Dan Acoustic/Electric stringed instruments ranging from 4 to 230 strings, hammered, picked, fingered, slapped, and plucked. J. Dan
It's also seemingly private... Hmm, I can see it and I'm not FB friends with the person who posted it. I'll see if I can get a copy to post to YouTube. Dan Acoustic/Electric stringed instruments ranging from 4 to 230 strings, hammered, picked, fingered, slapped, and plucked. CowboyNQ
But a lot of the fun for me comes just with hanging out with my band mates before and after gigs and during breaks. Without having seen the video, I nonetheless wholeheartedly agree, and I'd include rehearsal time too. Being friends with your colleagues makes all those hours spent together a joy rather than a chore!

Joe Muscara
The music, the money, and the hang, you have to have at least two out of three. I'm looking forward to the video, Dan... Moonglow
The music, the money, and the hang, you have to have at least two out of three. +1 Ive known the sax player in my band since kindergarten, and our drummer (before he retired a few years ago) since high school! Ive known our lead singer for the 38 years the band has been together. Weve all been band mates, business partners (we collectively owned a nightclub for eight years), but most importantly friends...actually we all say family...the entire time. Yep, weve pretty much been through it all together, and have always supported each other through lifes twists and turns. Seems we never run out of some memorable experience to reminisce or laugh about during set-up, tear-down, breaks, etc. So the hang component definitely runs a little deeper among all of us. J. Dan
I just did a screen capture of the FB video, so it's a little jittery compared to the original, but you'll get the idea. Outkaster
My problem with all of this it's fun to hang out and be "Friends" but if you lead a band it's a different story because you are going to have to be the bad guy eventually so it's a balancing act. I literally have to keep my self in check to make sure things get done as I am a social person and have to make sure I know boundaries. Last week I was in Buffalo, NY and a buddy there came to sing with us as we travel in the same musical circles. On a break before the third the girl singers said I was very detailed and they didn't necessarily know why (dealing with them is like having two more girlfriends ) He stuck up for me and said "be glad he is like that" It's also tough not to internalize everyone's issues because I have found you need to a certain extent so things can get done and also keep things moving. eric
I love the fact that my band members are all very close friends with one another and we never have any drama. We've all known each other for many years (some dating back to childhood) and we genuinely enjoy spending time together. We have an annual band "river retreat" where we hide out in the cold of winter to learn new songs at our drummer's river house, but mostly we just eat, drink, watch silly movies, and enjoy each other's company. We strive to rehearse weekly and usually have a goal like learning some new songs or brushing up some tunes if we have had a lapse in gigs. Lately we have been less on those types of actual musical goals and still have rehearsal just as a time to hang out and have fun. There have been times where we don't even turn on our instruments. We just hang out together. Another thing that helps us from a "business" standpoint is we have divided up responsibilities pretty well amongst the members. One guy does the books/accounting, one does website, one has the rehearsal space and PA equipment, one is the MD/gig logistics person, 1-2 book most of the gigs, etc. This is nice as we are all contributing in some way and we've managed to keep the band a democracy. The only challenge we've had that crops up cyclically is a few members are not as available to play quite the same quantity of gigs as the band wants to do. To solve for this, we have found a reliable and talented backup substitute that we use frequently. He's also part of the circle of friends and we're bringing him on the river retreat next year given the fact that he is practically a 7th member of the band.
