Allan Zavod Keyboard solo with Jean Luc Ponty

I ran across this terrific Jean Luc Ponty clip with Allan Zavod pulling off a solo on an ARP 2600.

I loved the tasteful use of both pitch bend and timbral change on the ARP (most people do one or the other and often not tastefully) and was wondering if there are keyboard solos (I am familar with Edgar's Winters' Frankenstein, and I would prefer that this thread not be about that impressive performance) .... which utilize timbral variation tastefully. Thanks in advance.

I covered him in my synth soloing column a ways back.

Thank you for all you do for us, Jerry. :2thu:

As usual (sadly) sorry for the broken links to the full solos. Hopefully with the Future acquisition we'll be able to fix these web woes.

Hopefully. :)

Saw Zavod with MF when I was a senior in high school. Maynard gave him room to stretch out. Outstanding.

9 Moog things, 3 Roland things, 2 Hammond things and a computer with stuff on it

A great player, who should not be forgotten.

Not the same tune/solo, but I covered him in my synth soloing column a ways back.

Jerry, thanks for this link! Enjoying your discussion with the original tunes, while typing this. I truly appreciate the research and analysis (and careful transcriptions!) you have done for us. :thu:

I loved that JLP period - both Imaginary Voyage and Enigmatic Ocean were heavy rotation, as was the live album when it hit.

It sounds like I have (happily) stumbled on a great big gap in my education. :thu::D

There is such a great deal of careful lyricism and nods to jazz traditions in the JLP of this period. The lyricism reminds me of some of my favorite Tony Banks' compositions, the jazz reminds of some amazing collaborations between Michael Brecker and Pat Metheny. This is going to be a wonderful Sunday of listening. It's like coming home.

The first time I became aware of Allen was on a Maynard Ferguson recording of La Fiesta.....SICK Rhodes solo....that guy SMOKES...

I'll check this out too. My exposure to MF was in the realm of "Mr Lips" rather than the SICK jazz arranger and composer he is. Thanks! Allen Zavod is one of those amazing musicians who I guess just flew under my radar for some reason. RIP.

I'm sorry but the "pitchbending" is terrible....

Like said before, not easy with a knob, and that's exactly

why he shouldn't have messed with it in the first place

Gotta love the 2600 though...

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Yeah....his live shows especially reminded me in later years of those "Strongman" shows were guys blow up hot water bottles, tear phone books in half and bend horse shoes more than a concert, what with all the high note jock stuff going on....his studio albums, especially before he decided he wanted to be a rock star (Rocky, Star Trek....etc) had some really cool musical moments....

This is the song I heard on the radio that turned me on to jazz rock. It's from JLP's Cosmic Messenger. The whole album is good. I saw Ponty's band play this live and Allan Zavod played it just as well as he did on the album.

First time I was aware of him was when I watched him playing with Maynard @ Disneyworld. Great ideas and wasnt trying to stand out using wired voicing, etc. He fit in like that with every band he worked with.

Thanks for the Jean Luc vid, never saw that one,
