ani
For those of use have busy, busy lifestyles and are constantly on the go; we have a tendency to eat out a lot. For those of you that eat at the fast food joints, and even in sit down restuarants, I found a link that give calories and nutritional values to most of your Fast Food = FAT Food establishments. Good GOD!!!!! No wonder so many younger folks are dying of heart attacks, strokes and other things... The sodium levels, along with the fat grams and calories, that are served up in single servings at these quick stops are insane.... I'll be bookmarking this site... it contains a wealth of information for folks serious about getting back to good health and STAYING there... my advice would be to STAY AWAY from most of these places... I knew that from the past, but in having kids, have fallen back into the trap of Taco Bell, and other quick inexpensive food shops.... Mom will be back in the kitchen again I don't want my kids OR myself porking out with unecessary intake of unhealthy garbage. Fruit and steamed veggies... and all the healthy stuff tastes a lot better anyway. http://www.fatcalories.com/
ani
For travel, it will be Subway and Applebee's who now have light menus that offer very healthy meals.
KenElevenShadows
Healthy food can be served quickly, too. Go to those places. Pack your lunch more. When you must eat at other places that are not so healthy, order a salad, cut your meal in half and save the rest for later, and eat far more fruit and vegetables, which can be purchased in any store and is ready to eat right away. Also, eat five or six small meals a day so you are not famished and are more tempted to eat lots of junk food. Go on lots of quick walks - even ten minutes helps. Open your mind to other possibilities (different kinds of food, different ways of eating) that you might not ordinarily try. Don't eat so much at night. Drink more water and less drinks with sugar in it. Diet drinks do not equal health drinks!!!! Oh, and did I mention to eat more fruits and vegetables? Do all this and I can guarantee that you feel the difference almost immediately. ViLo
I'm a vegetarian, Burger KIng serves veggie burgers, so I try to find a burger king somewhere, but if not I aske for a salad or a jumbo burger and I take the meat out Jesus Is Coming, Make Music, Get Ready! Jeebus
Eat sushi. It's generally quite healthy and low in fat and sodium, unless you drench it in soy sauce.
cherri
My problem isn't so much knowing what healthy items to eat. It's finding some place that's open at 4AM when we're famished, tired, and have to hit the road for home ... that serves healthy food. www.metalblues.com
fantasticsound
My parents had 4 boys in the car and we used to drive 24 hours straight through from Chicago to Ft. Lauderdale. The most intelligent thing they did on those trips was to pack a huge cooler with sandwiches and healthy snacks. To accompany our candy and chips, of course! Seriously, having a cooler with good stuff not only saves you unnecessary calories, but stops as well. Instead of stopping for food, you only stop for gas and stretch breaks. Plus, you'll never be without good food at 3am. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
D_dup3
Well, it's not really the fat that's such a problem with convenience eating. A certain amount of fat is needed for brain functions. Processed foods (& that goes for all the "fat free" stuff being marketed) are deficient in nutrients proportionally to the degree of processing. Even freezing lessens nutritional value. ani
It's not a problem in knowing that fast food joints are unhealthy; I've managed to stay away from all the burger joints, for the most part, for years. Taco Bell, on the other hand, I thought was not such a bad place if you ordered the chicken taco salads and such.... it floored me when I looked at the calorie chart for them. McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, and places like that... I would say that over the last twenty years I would be stretching it to say that I've bought meals from all combined a total of 100 times; all of which have been since I had children that turned school age. I try to find places like Boston Market, turkey breast, Applebee's weight watcher's menu, and other places that do have salad bars when dining out. My daughter was bugging me to buy her a Chalupa from Taco Bell earlier, and yet she's complaining about all the skinny, skinny girls in her school; so I've been working with her on learning to watch her weight. When I pulled the stats to show her how many calories a chalupa had; it blew me away. Just out of curiosity, I browsed through some of the other stats. D_dup3
Having worked in the food industry, I would caution that the difference between places like Boston Market, Subway or any other choice vs. a "fast food" place is a lot less than you might imagine, both in food quality & sanitation standards. If you go out to eat at all, stick to places that are known to prepare food from fresh ingredients.
Randy Combs
I go to grocery stores.Eating at restaurants will take your money quick.Wal- Marts are everywhere and their supercenters are reasonable. If you are a road musician, you are traveling most like in a bus or a RV like we do and they have converters for a microwave. We rarely eat at restaurants on the road. phaeton
"eating on the road" is such a title that soooo tempts me to post images of roadkill. ani
Ah, but Phaeton, Deer meat and venison are among the healthiest of healthy meats. Pure lean meat.
ITGITC
Yeah.. but, but here's a news flash: McDonalds has just signed a deal with T-Mobile to install Wi-Fi hotspots in SIX THOUSAND RESTAURANTS before the end of the year!! Here\'s the story. For anyone who travels but needs to stay connected, this is great! Starbucks has already done this. Many Borders and/or B.Dalton bookstores have too. I try to stay away from McD's food, but since they are ubiquitous and are installing all these hotspots, it will make it that much easier to stay connected to the SSS!! I mean, how many of us can live a happy life without hearing from Ani and Tedster and Craig and The Wewus and Jeff the Marketing Weasel and Ouizel and all the others!!?? Not ME!! (...Group hug!) It's not an addiction I'm proud of, but hey... it keeps me coming back and clicking on those GOOGLE ADS!! Is There Gas In The Car? phaeton
Deer meat and venison are among the healthiest of healthy meats. Pure lean meat. I had conjured up a mess of messy images involving skunks, possums and kangaroos... Of course, eating too much gamey meat isn't very pleasant. I think i want to try to become a vegetarian again (like my brand new gf)... Dr. Seuss: The Original White Rapper . WWND?
ani
Nothing wrong with vegetarianism; I was one for several years. Still I tend to opt for veggies over red meat any day. I like the veggie burgers and I'm real big on yogart dishes or drinks. I will eat seafood, fish, and fowl. Rarely eat any red meats and almost NEVER touch pork. dementia13
Well, it's not really the fat that's such a problem with convenience eating. A certain amount of fat is needed for brain functions The catch is that you can get your daily fat requirement from a bowl of plain oatmeal. I have to get lunch out every day, but I avoid fast food restaurants like the plague. The only one I'll go to is Wendy's; not exactly health food but at least it's real food. Subway is usually a good healthy choice, I hit Chinese buffets a lot. There tend to be a lot of buffets around here, which is great if you've got self-control and don't feel like you have to stuff yourself. There's usually a lot of good vegetables and soups on the buffets, so I hit those hard.
Blue Strat
Fat isn't a problem, it's the fact that people don't walk or do manual labor, or many physical activities anymore. It's a matter of excercise and calorie intake. If you sit on your ass all day, you're going to get fat even if all you eat is "healthy" food. BlueStrat a.k.a.
