OT - Do b12 shots work?

Recommended Posts

I played a gig this past weekend with another solo guy and his girlfriend is a nurse and she shot him up with b12. Asked me if I wanted a shot. I didn't. A friend of ours did. I forgot to ask him if it helped. Just wondering. If they really give you energy. Whilst imbibing post-gig with beer and wine, as well.

B12 shots are like anything else -- use only if needed, and don't overdo. But if you're running a B vitamin deficiency, a shot can really help get you back to the positive side of the ledger.

I've had maybe 3 or 4 B12 shots in my life and they do what you expect -- give you more B vitamines, which usually does increase energy. In some people, lack of B vitamins also causes depression, so you may experience a lift in spirits as well.

No, I'm not a doctor, so the usual disclaimers apply!!

Try a B complex vitamin. Look on the label and get the bottle with the highest amount of B vitamins. It's usually labeled Super B-Complex. It's now time-released (didn't used to be).

Take it in the morning with a cup of coffee! :thu: Not only does it give you energy, but it helps in many other ways. The best benefit besides heightening your mood is that it will help with a hangover. Take a B vitamin before you go out drinking. Also, drink a few glasses of water (stay hydrated). A couple of aspirin will help thin your blood. The next day, if you do have a hangover, it will be minimal.

Also smoking (anything) will rob your body of vitamins B and C. So, if you drink, smoke, or indulge in recreational drugs, be sure to replinish these vitamins.

My father has pernicious anemia. Ever since I can remember he has had to get a B12 shot every month or so. He gets pretty irritable before the shot. Afterwards he's a new man. His mood goes from seriously grumpy to great immediately after the B12 shot.

Finally, Craig is correct - B-vitamins help relieve depression. For many of us moody musician types, vitamin B supplements are very helpful, if not mandatory. I keep plenty on hand... all the time! :)

Okay, Tom, say I plan on getting loaded. Beer. (I wish you would have told me before Mardi Gras.) So, take two aspirin, a b-complex vitamin and drink a lot of water and you're saying I should have less of a hangover? I'll try it some day.

Yup! I'm surprised that more people don't know about this. I found out about it when I worked in a drugstore. I was 16. That's when, if you wanted to buy a pack of condoms you had to ask the pharmacist for them! They kept them 'behind the counter'!

Anyway, yes, it was the pharmacist who told me about vitamin B complex (plus aspirin, plus drink lots of water to stay hydrated since alcohol is a diuretic).

I have a problem with depression anyway, so it REALLY helps me! Since I wrote the first post, I got to thinking if this is genetic... My father has prenicious anemia and receives B12 shots. I feel markedly better when I pop a Vitamin B Complex. Is there a link?

But yes, Duke - try it. The worst it can do is make your urine VERY YELLOW! :D
