OT - Where the heck do these instant messages come from?

Recommended Posts

I have a friend's computer and am still waiting for him to give me the Win serial number product code. Anyway, several times per hour, an instant message will pop up about bigbonerbiz or instantmortgare or whatever. Where do these come from? Is this a virus or trojan horse or spyware or what?

I initially got his computer to fix it because IE won't work and I told him I thought the virus he had months ago... must not have been totally removed (by me). Regardless, I am going to reformat and wipe it out but I think I need his code.

If you're using Windows XP, the 'Windows Messenger' service is 'on' (by default - smooth move, Bill..)

All you should need to do is disable this service, and the windows messenger spam-ola should stop.

Disabling the Messenger Service

To remove the ability for anyone in the world to pop up messages on your computer, you can disable the Messenger service. Its easy to reverse at a later time if you wish to do so.

Windows 2000

Click Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->Services

Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"

Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.

Click the STOP button.

Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar

Click OK

Windows XP Home

Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel

Click Performance and Maintenance

Click Administrative Tools

Double click Services Scroll

down and highlight "Messenger"

Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.

Click the STOP button.

Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar

Click OK

Windows XP Professional

Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel

Click Administrative Tools

Click Services

Double click Services Scroll

down and highlight "Messenger"

Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.

Click the STOP button.

Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar

Click OK

Windows NT

Click Start ->Control Panel

Double Click Administrative Tools

Select Services-> Double-click on Messenger

In the Messenger Properties window, select Stop,

Then choose Disable as the Startup Type

Click OK

Good luck - we're all counting on you.
