The REAL American Idol question...

I think if Clay Aiken's people can move him along with his core fan base (young girls) as their tastes in music change, he'll sell records five years from now.

He's also got an older woman fan base (Josh Groban lovers) that he shouldn't alienate.

Man, I am SO glad I now know the REAL AI question! :P

The question isn't meant to be facetious. It's very difficult to win on AI, so the winners should be commended. The question in my mind is, do the winners of a TV talent competition necessarily have what it takes to be a successful recording artist? Would AI produce a Madonna or an Elton John who produce successful records for years (even decades), or is the show going to produce one (not very good) hit wonders?

So far the only AI product that I've heard was a single by Kelly Clarkson (sp??). She has a lovely voice, but the song was entirely forgettable. Maybe the others are doing better?

Another interesting question is, will AI inspire a resurgence in PERFORMERS? Popular music has been dominated by PERFORMER/COMPOSERS since the late 60's. Performers (Elvis, Sinatra, Diana Ross) performed other people's songs. PERFORMER/COMPOSERS (Beatles/Who/Billy Joel) perform their own.

Any thoughts?

The Black Knight always triumphs!

It's hard to imagine AI performers having much "staying power". Considering much of their success is due to the massive exposure they get through the endless weeks of the competition... exposure they haven't been able to generate through their own efforts elsewhere in showbiz...

For every Kelly, (who may have the best "chance" at a real career of all so far), there's a Justin. Errr... Justin who?

He, and many of the other "AI Celebs" will be a Trivial Pursuit question before too long.

One other thing against a "long term" success. The contract they're forced to sign doesn't really allow them to financially hit the jackpot should they defy the odds and really sell a bunch of product. The AI PRODUCER controls their career with an iron grip, and greedy fist.

Of course no one has to sign such a one-sided contract... but maybe that's why THIS years contest is decidedly "thinner" talent-wise compared with previous years... the "word" is out... AI is a BAD career move... IF you really have the potential to make it big.

I'm still "guitplayer"!

I'll give "Train" a fighting chance. Although they are not AI shop talk, they have had moderate success and I believe will continue to do so.

The entire "Drops of Jupiter" CD kicks major ass.... I listened to the set of songs from their second CD streamed from their web site and Calling All Angels is a "sucky" song; but some of the others are still right up there with their first CD. "Angels" should have been buried in the filler tracks for the CD.

I'm not finding the site where I heard the full length stream of that CD, but here is another link that has portions of songs... http://www.trainline.com/

My Private Nation is a great track, Counting Airplanes is pretty cool too,

...and the thing about Train is this... I "LIKE" their music compositions ... They have a niche for interesting turnabouts in the musical direction that are very smooth and keep things interesting.

On the same release as "Drops of Jupiter", there is another track call "They Call Her Mississippi" the song is probably one of the best Blues tunes that I've heard in years. I entrances me every time I hear the song.

Calling All Angels... SUCKS big time, but after buying the Drops of Jupiter CD first, I allowed myself to look beyond one SAP tune and hear some other great music falling into play. When they start producing full CD's of crap music, then they will lose me as a fan. CAA is not so bad that I cannot tone out the mush lyrics and listen to the song for it's composition; though it's not one of their better tunes all the way around.
