And what is it with this generation of movie makers? Are they afraid of strong characters. Peter Jackson did the same crap with Aragorn ... Turned him into this pitiful man of self doubt. Never did Tolkein's Aragorn doubt who he was, what his mission was and what he was born to do and be.

When people start taking this stuff seriously it stops being fun, I think.

I remember the whole LOTR discussions. For people familiar with the books, he changed a whole bunch of dialogues between characters, and besides the Aragorn thing, he turned Gimli into a buffoon. Some fans I think did a re-edit of The Two Towers editing the silly Gimli stuff. Hobbit was a mess though.

However, I did enjoy the LOTR movies a lot. The results could have been disastrous, and he really took it seriously. These types of movies were always comical at best, and the final result, without picking at details, was impressive.

This SW petition is silly (I think someone edited it out of the reply). Really? The movie is certainly not perfect, but I and II are painful to watch for me, with III the only salvage worthy. I thought the whole decision to abandon the legacy literature was odd, but so be it.

To be this rabid about all of it is what makes sci-fi fandom idiotic and infantile to people who aren't so much into it.

Now I'm not such a fan of the old movies that I can't allow any departures from. And I did enjoy most of the movie and didn't critique it much while watching. The fun part was just being with my grand kids. But it was definitely a Disney movie. SPOILER ALERT (you have been warned) My issues are:

1) So now Leia who has supposed potential but never ever learned to use the force is now 'Super Girl' who can fly through the near vacumn of space. Shouldn't the superman pose be trade marked? And the CGI was horribly fake.

2) The hero of the original movies is now a pitiful self loathing snowflake.

3) Yoda's ghost can get fat? And not look anything like living yoda?

4) The rich fat cats who sell arms to both sides? Yes let's put politics into it since civilizations as advanced as that couldn't have a different economic system. Besides we don't get enough political views rammed down our throats.

5) Nod to PETA, child labor. Check and check because again rich equals bad. Unless your Disney Corp.

6) Why are the heroes diversified and the villains all white men?

Stereotype much?

And since its a Disney movie I assume the kids at the end wearing the rebel rings will become the heroes in any sequels. Of course all the while still kids and the parents don't know because all grown ups are oblivious and much less intelligent then their children.

1. Why not? What more likely situation to illicit an instinctual survival mechanism than being faced with immediate death? And haven't fans always wondered when Leia would show force ability?

2. Luke's story is depicted in IV, V, and VI. We are not privy to the many other adventures he had outside of these films. However, in the expanded universe there are many that see his force powers grow toward Yoda's. In his finale he has become so powerful in the force that he is able to project himself across multiple galaxies to save the day. In physical death he joins the other masters and cements his place in the history and lineage of the Jedi.

3. As force ghosts they seem to appear as the beholder imagines and or recognizes them. Luke was with Yoda when he passed and his body was a shell of his younger self that we see in I, II, III (though he walks with can't even then! Yoda lived a long time!). Luke's projection looks to Leia and Kylo like a younger version of himself as they think of him.

4. Star Wars is very political. All 9 films are a struggle for power in the galaxy between the rebels and empire. In fact I, II, III spent so much time on the politics of Star Wars that most scenes happen in and around the capital and in the Senate where Yoda and Palpatine actual duel!

5. Same scenario. Luke is a poor farm boy hidden from the forces of the evil empire that would control the galaxy and its riches and turn him to the dark side. In I the evil trade federation are blocking commerce and travel on and off of Nabu. That's the story. Are you just waking up to the politics of Star Wars? It's populist and fictitious. It's a story. But we relate most to stories that are "real" to us.

6. Uh, Jaba the Hut? Snoke? Fatima? Boba Fett? Lando? The Trade Federation? All the alien war profiteers in VIII? Tuskan Raiders/Sand People? the alien that rations food to Rey? The flying alien that young Anakin and his mom are slaves to? The bad guys aren't diverse and all white men? This is sci fi across alien worlds. Are we watching the same movies? You made this up. In fact the heroes/good guys who's story we follow are - Anakin, Luke, Obi Wan, Qui Jan, Leia, Han, Rey, etc. are more heavily resembling white people of the human species.

Hmmm... Sense a political agenda, I do. Anger, fear, outrage...lead to the Dark Side, these things do. Be mindful, Luke. Powerful, the Dark Side is.

It sucked bantha balls. Director and crew from VIII seemed to be on a mission to blow up the work of the director and crew from VII. They need to stick with a single creative team for an entire trilogy.

LMAO - This reminds me of that stupid episode of South Park where they were complaining about what Lucas and Spielberg did to the re-releases of their movies, and the kids complained, "these are our movies! They belong to us!" Sorry, they don't. You paid your $10 to see it in the theater and no one guarantees what subsequent releases will be like. If you don't like Episode 8, you don't have to bother with 9. No one owes you anything.

1) Nobody else that have powers fly through space. And again it was really bad CGI.

2) I'm talking this movie only. If he has immense powers why is he such basket case?

3) No its just really bad CGI.

4) True, but that is a question I had about the first ones too. If I was an emperor with 'magical' powers why would I need people who sell weapons to my enemy? Wouldn't I just 'project' the force and kill them? I would know they are selling to the rebels. It would be harder to locate many scattered rebels across a galaxy than very rich people in a casino.

5) No I'm not just waking up to the politics. Its a problem I have always wondered. Why do people with supposed immense powers only mostly use them for parlor tricks. And does anyone believe that earth like capitalism exists everywhere in the universe? If you have powers who needs money?

6) Again I am talking just THIS movie. The good guys left alive are robots, female, black, asian, white, alien etc. Now look at the two who are the evil guys left and their generals. Normally I don't care at all but it just seemed a bit too contrived.

I am not trying start a political discussion at all. My problem is the lack of imagination in this film and this one only. I was never a huge fan of any of the star wars movies. I was hoping for something more original. And that's not just a problem with this film. I rather liked the Avatar movie more, in it the Aliens while colorful had a unique society unlike anything here they were alien. Yes humans were both evil and hero but its logical because they were from Earth their society evolved here. So you expect them to be earth like. But a long time ago in a galaxy far far away I didn't expect to see earth like issues. Makes me not want venture into space.

It could be that Rian Johnson is clearing the table for more complex character development from the leads than just good or bad. It's something Marvel has been doing for years, and what my three favorite sci/fi action/adventure movies of the year have in spades (Logan, War of the Planet of the Apes, Blade Runner 2049).

If that's the case, I'm all for it. JJ Abrams can either take it from here, or take it all back (something fairly easy to do in the Star Wars universe).

Guess we'll know the answer in a couple of years.

If you read back your original post it's maybe more political than you were trying to be, which is off limits here. :cop: The topic is already OT - would be a shame a current topic gets taken down because the community can't play nice. Also why get involved in a Star Wars topic when you are not a fan of and admittedly don't care for the others from the 70s through today? When comparing this movie to other movies and plots ok, I get what you're saying but compared to the other seven films this one is pretty good, especially after that beating I-III took from fans (whch Lucas had full control of). Regardless those films brought in a whole new generation of fans. Go figure. I personally didn't care for Avatar at all. Many agree, but a lot of people saw it and have their own opinions. To each their own.

After 2.5 hours of orchestra music, I was worn out. Almost fell asleep at the end.

It kinda reminded me of a road runner cartoon show. Road Runner gets away, Coyote chases, makes a plan, doesn't work, repeat.

So many plot holes, no cliff hanger, no difference of characters from when the movie started to when it finished, except Luke and Snoke. A big stalemate.

What do they do in the 9th movie with Leah?

This came around the time of The Force Awakens and it still makes me laugh.
