whitefang
...is new again! These musings go back 20 or so years, when my Mother started reflecting on it. I'm just picking up the banner... When she was a kid, most doctors promoted exercize. Toe touching, knee bending, sit-ups and push-ups and any other exertion/resistance regimen that toned muscle, burned calories and promoted cardio/vascular health. By the time she started high school, through to the time I was high school age and beyond, most school systems adopted physical education courses that foremost featured children doing calisthenics, which was a regimen of exertion/resistance movements that toned muscle, burned calories and promoted cardio/vascular health. Which sounds a lot like exercize! By the late '70's, the rage was something called aerobics. Done to the rythm of music, aerobics was a regimen of exertion/resistance movements that toned muscle, burned calories and promoted cardio/vascular health. Which sounds like calisthenics, which sounds like exercize! So, here we are in the new millenium. And recently, many people are buying video tapes and other paraphenalia in order to try and get into shape by doing pilates. Pilates are a form of exertion/resistance movements that tone muscle, burns calories and promotes cardio/vascular health. Which sounds like aerobics. Which sounds like calisthenics. which sounds like exercize. In the house that Jack built! I'm going to make sure I at least do one of those in order to live long enough to see what the new word for exercize will be! Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! phaeton
really? I thought these days people took pills to lose weight while they slept. Unfortunately, most of them are so amped up on Viagra that they spend much less time sleeping. As for my case, quitting smoking is what caused my weight gain. Lack of exercise is what has allowed it to stay. Period. No excuses. c'mon summer weather, the bicycle is awaiting! Dr. Seuss: The Original White Rapper . WWND? Tedster
So, how're things up in Whitehorse? Still a bit frosty, I reckon...but at least you all are getting a bit more light by now... Sometimes I miss the north country. Then, sometimes I try to talk myself out of it. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"

coyote
Eat a little less, exercise a little more... boy, there's never been an easier formula for success. The problem is, most folks think that the weight they put on over the past eight years can somehow vanish in eight weeks. It's the #1 fallacy perpetrated by advertisers on willfully gullible 'targets'. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. Philip OKeefe
It takes years to put it on, and while it may not take years to actually take it all off, the only real and effective way to do so (and keep it off) is to effect a lifestyle change - which includes changing your diet and physical activity levels. Doing one without the other is always going to be less effective. And "diets" don't work simply because once you've reached your goal, most people revert back to their old lifestyle - and the weight comes right back. whitefang
It doesn't always take years, Phil. Back in '96, I developed what is known as "chronic vienous insufficiency". Plus, the swelling in my left leg just below the knee was inflamed. The treatment for that was to continually prop my leg up, put ice on the inflammation and just sit like that 'till it's gone. I'll always have the vienous insufficiency, but in the six weeks it took my inflammation to go away I gained a whole lotta pounds that refuse to go away! As the condition limits my mobility to short spurts, running, or even extended walking is out of the question. Crunches and the like have yet to be effective, and simple dieting is getting me nowhere. Still, I try. And refuse to get into the "fast loss" snake oil race.
