Happytomato
I haven't thoroughly checked the entire forum to see if this subject hasn't been exhausted already... I'm currently looking at the Soundblaster Audigy Platinum sound card system, and the Yamaha CRW-2100SZ. I primarily want to be able to make copies of my MiniDisc recordings to CD. Eventually, i'd also want to start recording direct to the computer. The main reason for my looking at the SB is price. I've found it for about $200. The computer i'll be using is a used P-300, 96MB ram, 9G HD, and it also has a SCSI card in it. i know it's a bit slow, and i know i should save up for a minimum 1.5Mhz computer that i can prolly find for under $1000, but i don't have that kind of money. Just trying to cut corners at least until Pentium processors come down in price for about $50 each. :p Would the SB stuff be fine for this application? if not are there other cost-effective alternatives? Thanks for your time!
AudioMaverick
Happytomato, the Yamaha CD burners are generally a good bet. Definitely, one of the top 3 of my choices (Plextor & HP being the other two). As for the sound card, try a look at this site - AudioTrak . They have two mutli trak cards - Inca88 & Maya44. They are lower-end multi-track card, but have more capability than the SoundBlaster. I ran into a distibutor in the LA area... http://www.egosys.net . The 4-channel card was about $150, and the 8-channel about $250 (going by memory on these prices). I'm not sure what the added costs would be to send them to Hawaii. Hope it is n't much. "It's all about the... um-m-m, uh-h-h..."
Dylan
For under $200 you could get either the Echo MIA or the M-Audio Audiophile . Both would give you much better audio quality and drivers than the Sound Blaster. As far as CDR-W drives go, any major name brand drive should work fine. I had tons of luck with my Teac until I put it in my girlfriends PC. [ 12-28-2001: Message edited by: Dylan Walters ]
Hippie
I agree with Dylan. The Soundblaster cards are more about 'reproducing' sound vs. 'recording' sound. And with the Soundblaster you will probably have to contend with the 1/8" unbal. jack for the analog ins which would omit the possibility of phantom powered devices. In two days, it won't matter. Happytomato
Thanks much for the quick replies, all.... Gee, to think that i might be able to afford a M-Audio product? yikers! That audiophile 2496 card looks really good...but i'll prolly have to go with getting a faster computer, which would be a good thing in the long run...
