techristian
I wanted to make this a 3 PAGE post, but I decided to abbreviate it because otherwise I would put it off and put it off..........and never get it posted. 1) The Yale hotel does have great BLUES JAM sessions every Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 7 pm. I played with a very solid band and it was fun. (but the pan handlers ,behind the club, got me coming AND going) 2) Vancouver IS BLOOMING even RIGHT NOW. We won't see blossoms on the trees for another month here in Windsor. 3) It rains most of the time in the winter and spring. We had continuous rain for 4 days while we were there BUT BOTH WINTER AND SUMMER ARE MODERATED BY THE OCEAN. It seldom gets cold enough to snow and a "hot" day in Vancouver will be 85 degrees farenheit. 4) For $8 a day the Skyrail was fun and would take me anywhere in greater Vancouver but after 3 DRENCHING DAYS I rented a car. 5) Property is affordable in the suburbs. $222k buys a nice new 4 BDRM condo in Maple RIDGE JUST 30 MILES FROM DOWNTOWN. 6) Many unfortunate people have been released from B.C. asylums onto the street and I met a few of them. 7) Chain/franchise restaurants charge the same for food as others with the same name here in Ontario. 8) There are plenty of sushi bars. 9) A relative of my wife told me to warn my daughter about the MOTION PICTURE BUSINESS. 10) Stanley park was fun. 11) Ayotte drums already have an exclusive dealer for my area. 12) The Ocean air smells great! 13) Seafood ,in the grocery store, is cheaper than here in Ontario. 14) I would like to "retire" there. If anyone wants me to go deeper into the details just ask. Dasher
I'll be spending a thu-fri-sat there in July. Did you see any jazz jams (or blues jams with piano or organ?) I'm not Joey (see above - is he? looks too young... but I play decent jazz/blues/funk on the beast. Also straight-ahead to outside piano. Where can I get a groove on? Dasher It's all about the music. Really. I just keep telling myself that... The Soundsmith

The music scene sucks. The yale and fairview are highlights. The ocean does indeed rock though. And the outer lying areas such as the north shore and whistler area are gorgeous. I only made it to the Yale. After my flight the JET LAG made me want to sleep at 10PM every day. (10pm in Vancouver is like 1AM here.) In the jam at the Yale they only used guitars and drums. urk10 Vancouver sucks. WHAT IS THAT ALL ABOUT? Could you expand? Henchman
Vancouver is a nice place to visit. But me, I'll be retiring somewhere else. The music scene sucks here. there's nowhere decent for bands to play. The work situation is horrible. So is the studio scene. And I'm lucky, because I work at one of the best Post-facilities in town. techristian
Do you play an Ayotte kit? I've found that a lot of people have never even heard of them, but they're quite cool. One of my clients plays them. Nice kits. I have never really had the chance to "lay into" a set of Ayottes. I tapped on a snare at the factory and I liked the sound of it and I tapped on a used set of toms in the music store. The toms were tuned WAY DOWN LOW and I wasn't overly impressed with their sound. I suppose if I really "layed into" them they may have sounded better. I have heard great sounding drums for $1000 and I have heard mediocre drums for $5000 dollars. It partly depends on how you hit them. Of course you also know Phil that the quality and placement of microphones in the studio will also make or break the studio sound. Veracohr
I spent a couple days in Vancouver last year. I thought it was great, I really really liked it. Enough to want to move there. Philip OKeefe
Thanks for the reply Dan. So, what do you normally use for your kit? And I'm all ears when it comes to recommendations for good sounding $1K kits - I may add a studio kit, and I don't want to spnd a small fortune if I can avoid it AND still get a good sounding drum kit. techristian
Thanks for the reply Dan. So, what do you normally use for your kit? And I'm all ears when it comes to recommendations for good sounding $1K kits - I may add a studio kit, and I don't want to spnd a small fortune if I can avoid it AND still get a good sounding drum kit. For the past few years I was using 2 sets of Pearl drums put together. (With my old 70's Ludwig snare) They only costed $600 for BOTH SETS, but because these were smaller drums I wasn't entirely happy with them. The BASS drum was only 18 inches in diameter. I still have one set left. I also know that Ludwig makes a low line set. I usedto really like the sound of TAMA drums and before they became popular they were also under $800. The new drums that I plan to get are UNDERDOGS right now and I'm not even going to mention the name of them until I try them in my studio and am ready to endorse them. From what I've seen of them, they may be a sleeping giant. I will take this to a new thread after I get the new drums and use them in the studio setting. Give me a month or 2. I'll have them shipped across the country as soon as I get my income tax money back. As I said before it is partly up to the drummer to make THE SOUND. (Where he hits, not letting the sticks drag, hitting with confidence etc.) Drums are a primitive instrument. It is easy to manufacture an inexpensive set with good quality. If you have a studio open to other drummers though, they may sneer when they discover the brand I'm looking at, but trust me that proper tuning and prudent microphone placement is also key. (I almost forgot....EQ also and lots of compression) Dan http://teachmedrums.com TEACHMEDRUMS.COM My Music Videos RED PILL
