Autoharp accessories...

Recommended Posts

I recently picked up a 1950s-era Oscar Schmidt autoharp, and now I'm looking for some accessories. Specifically, I'm looking for a tuning wrench (the tuning pegs are square -- it's an "A Model" autoharp) and a no frills chipboard case. I checked out Elderly Instruments , except they have the tuning wrenches on backorder (and don't know when they'll be in). Also, while their chipboard case price is very reasonable ($24), the shipping costs are not ($12-$18!). If the place I order the case and tuning wrench from has a reasonable price (and shipping costs), I wouldn't mind ordering a set of A Model strings too. So... Does anyone know of a good place where I can order a tuning wrench and chipboard case for this thing? I haven't found a whole lot of stuff on the web and I doubt Guitar Center carries autoharp accessories... :) Thanks in advance! [ 12-27-2001: Message edited by: popmusic ]

Hey Pop, where do you live? The first place I'd check would be a local "mom and pop" (no pun intended) store. They usually have a bunch of catalogs from distributors like Coast Music that carry stuff like this, and can probably order what you need. Thanks for the suggestion, Phil... Turns out I think I found a place which sells what I'm looking for. Found them through Yahoo... It's weird -- Google has become my #1 search engine... So much so that I forgot that Yahoo was still around and is sometimes more "focused" (even if it's more limited) in its search results.

Have you checked out First Quality Insturments out of Louisville, Kentucky? They specialize in bluegrass instruments, as well as all manner of guitar/mandolin/etc. building supplies. www.fqms.com The best accessory you can get for an autoharp is Brian Farmer. ;) He was a guitar tech for Johnny Cash for about a decade, and took great care of June Carter Cash's autoharp. Unfortunately, you'll have to pay more and be worth leaving Gov't Mule and their buddies, for whom he's been teching the past 2 years. [ 12-28-2001: Message edited by: fantasticsound ]

It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman

I'll definitely check 'em out.
Originally posted by fantasticsound: [b]He was a guitar tech for Johnny Cash for about a decade, and took great care of June Carter Cash's autoharp. I think that might be a little out of my league. :) I don't even claim to know what I'm doing on autoharp (or just about any instrument, for that matter :) ). I've gotten into collecting instruments the way I used to collect keyboard patches -- I dig the sound of real instruments so much more than the sampled equivalent, except it is a bit more costly... :)
