I just learned of Gary Burton retirement

Jazz mallet player Gary Burton has performed his last concert &, apparently, made his last recordings.

Following several medical procedures relating to cardiac problems he found, after one that had him "lights out" for 1/2 hour, his previous sense of absolute pitch failing & some other cognitive probs so he decided to totally retire.

I saw Gary Burton play many years ago. I enjoyed it immensely.

 

I thought he had died, but it turns out I was confusing him with vibist Bobby Hutcherson who died last year. Hutcherson lived in the next town over from me on the coast just south of San Francisco.

These are only my opinions, not supported by any actual knowledge, experience, or expertise.

I saw Gary Burton play many years ago. I enjoyed it immensely.

 

I´ve seen G.B. & Chick Corea live with "Lyric Suite for Sextet".
