Churchill Downs was founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark, jr, grandson of famed explorer William Clark with his uncles (for whom the track was named) in 1874, after a tour of English racing sites. His intent was to make horse-racing more "family oriented, safer for race watchers but also more reliable.
