Sam Mullins
Saw his trio last night in a small setting (around 150 people) and it was fantastic. Total command of his playing, nothing wasted and magnificent touch. HIs treatment of McCartney's "For No One" brought tears to my eyes. If you get a chance don't miss him. tfort
Our local jazz club here in Albuquerque was gifted a Steinway B. After it was reconditioned, Fred Hersch did a concert to celebrate its arrival. Outstanding. http://www.outpostspace.org/pages/event/235516
Dave Ferris
A true poet. I've been a fan since I heard him ( and his tunes) on an Art Farmer record in the early 80's and then saw him out here with his trio. It was with Joey Baron and Marc Johnson. They were at a Holiday Inn in San Pedro of all places. Along with Mulgrew Miller , they are probably two of my favorite "name" pianists from my generation. To overcome his serious illness in 2008, rehab and get back to his current level of playing is nothing short of miraculous and awe inspiring. It shows how strong and resilient the human spirit can be. [video:youtube] His current Trio. Cool composition, the Steinway B sounds great but the drums are recorded a little hot...especially the snare. cedar
Love Fred. One quality of his I really admire: just like Bill Evans, he's deeply emotional, without ever sounding trite. A true original.
Dave Ferris
Fred has a new solo record out. Eronel as long been one of my favorite Monk tunes since I heard Sphere - Charlie Rouse, Kenny Barron, Buster Williams & Ben Riley - record it many years ago. I find this version fascinating for the counterpoint among other musical highlights. Yet for all the complexity it still swings. Beautiful voicings goes without saying whenever describing his playing. Excellent recording as well. Simply put, man I love this ! Al Quinn
A few years ago I was at the Newport Jazz Festival and was walking from a disappointing performance on the big stage (i.e., Dr. John) to what I knew would be a killer performance on the back stage (i.e., Mike Stern and Bill Evans). While walking I passed the small stage and heard music that stopped me in my tracks. It was Fred Hersch playing with his trio; I was behind the stage and could see and hear him very clearly. I was so captivated by his artistry. What I heard was so sincere, introspective, and beautiful! https://alquinn.com
