New R&R Hall Of Fame Inductees

To No Talent Bum----Bob Seger has been ripping it up LOOONNNGGGG before "Night Moves". You've never heard "East Side Story"? "Heavy Music", "Persecution Smith", or "Ramblin', Gamblin' Man"? "2+2=?" or "Back in '72"? There's gotta be NO question about his induction. Been pluggin' away since '64, and recording since '66. Being a Detroiter, or at least a Michigander, I would be remiss in not giving a resounding "YES!"

As for Prince? His mid to late '70's recordings had quite a bit of a deep rock groove to them. I always thought that short spell from "1999" on was sort of a step DOWN from his abilities. Only in more recent times has he shown he's far better and much more than that.

It's too bad that the R'n R Hall of fame has little to do with rock and roll and more to do with musical politics. Sometimes the two meet and that's cool.

If you think Sabbath is missing.. here is a reminder of one or two others that have been overlooked.

The author of this page makes some good points... but in the end stinks it up with some really dumb comments about worthwhile entries into the RRHOF.

It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman

Dan,

You just stunned me by queationing Princes influence on Rock and or his rock chops. Now granted George Harrison should have been in moons ago, but because the dummies waited so long to induct him, does that mean that prince should wait an additional 15 years. I'm saying I don't know, either way you go neither are correct.

As far as the rock thing goes, what defines rock and roll: To me two things screaming lead guitar, and the vocal phrasing of the songs. Clearly when you look at Princes body of work, clearly a whole boat load of his songs, and some of his best stuff, was clearly rock and roll!!!!

What should qualify you as an inducttee; an immortal sound, impact on the musical genre, and your impact on the masses. Once again he eaisly makes the cut in all the above areas. Prince did something that I've seen very few do, except the guys from the 50's, which were the root of Rock & Roll. That is, Prince got White folk and Black folk jamming together, caused a bunch of white boys to get turned on to funk & R&B, and got a bunch of black boys initiated in Rock. Man for that alone he deserves entrance.

Darklava,

Just to set the record straight...If pressed with gun to head, I would not be able to identify ONE George Harrison (or Beatles) tune ( well, except Hotel California :) )...

that aside, I'm sure everybody that was inducted have moved some, or many with their songs.

Interesting thing you guys got me thinking about...

Prince is not Rock & Roll! Nor is he funk, nor is he soul, or blues, or Pop, or balladeer....not in the strictest definition of those catagories.

Yet somehow, he is all of these things at the same time...either in his display of combined talents, or his individual song stylings.

And just about every album he's ever done, he's shown us a sampling of each catagory, sometimes several in the same song.

I can't think of anyone else that I can say that about. Something to think about.

TROLL . . . ish.

Oh BTW...what sort of guitar was he playing? Looked like an old Kay solidbody or something. Retro cheesy.

David Lindley is the master of taking the biggest piece of crap guitar and making it sound glorious. A true genius IMO. Not sure which one he was using on the album, or even which one he used live for it... it would probably depend on the show in question, but I know he used a lot of Tedesco Del Rays... might have been a Kay. He likes cheap Japaneese and Italian guitars from the 1960's.

And yes, I agree - it's a GREAT song!

This whole Hall Of Fame thing is stupid. 30 years in the business is not enough to determine if someone should be there. The only people that belong in any so called Hall Of Fame at this point are people like Chuck Berry, or Bo Diddley, or The Beatles, or The Stones.

Whenever you start any list like that you're going to exclude some very prominent people. Ya know? It doesn't make sense. To me now, it just seems like some money making scheme started by some guys in Cleveland.... Who is voting on all this? I could give a fuck who they elect, or don't elect to The Hall Of Fame, it's bullshit, and has no connection with reality.

What is the point of The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame? That whole concept goes against the spirit of Rock and Roll.

Rock is NOT an institution, it's a feeling of rebellion, and FREEDOM, and it has nothing to do with being honored, or receiving an award for doing what you love to do.

I think it's obvious at this point that The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame is just some money making scheme devised by.......who knows who.

Anybody know who's behind this thing? I think it's crap.

Who gives a fuck who's in or who's not? Is that what music IS, a contest?

Maybe they should make it into a Reality Show, where the Hall Of Fame nominees live in a huge house together, and then people around the country vote to see who gets into The Hall Of Fame.

:D:D Just my opinion DarkLava. That whole Hall Of Fame thing has become a joke to me. It's like some highschool bullshit. Are we in? Are we in?

You know what? If you don't know if you're in or not you're probably not.

So let's hear from The Hall Of Fame defenders. I don't think so. It's obvious bullshit.

I want to protest! The Bay City Rollers are not in yet. :freak:

Okay, maybe they shouldn't be, but Sweet ought to be. ;)

And Wewus, I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Music shouldn't be a contest... "who's better Hendrix or Clapton, or the Beatles or the Stones" sort of thing, but the dichotomy is that this IS an extremely competitive business. And I suppose you're right - the R&R HOF probably IS about business. Which means money.

It's a Hohner TE, telecaster knockoff. It's the guitar he had before he got his first record deal. He's been playing it a lot lately, instead of that ugly white cloud guitar. It's a tele knockoff, but it's got a bridge pickup in the neck position.

Actually, I just thought Prince was playing a stock Tele, so thanks for the info. I was asking about the guitar Jackson Browne was playing, which looked like a Teisco or a Kay...but they've been making higher quality replicas of cheesy looking retro guitars. This one even had cheesy cheap looking tuners...in lines...you could see it when they got a shot from the back.

And yup, I don't like that white cloud guitar Prince plays, either.

Jackson Browne is one of my all time favorite songwriters, but do I care that he's in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame? No... I don't. I'd like for him to write a song that was as good as Something Fine, or Under The Falling Sky, and let the future decide if he belongs in any Hall Of Fame.

To me, if you're elected to a Hall Of Fame, that's like saying your career is over. Isn't that the way it works in baseball? You're not eligible until you retire. Plus it's not even The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, it's The POP Music Hall Of Fame. Let's call it what it is. It's POP Music. Rock and Roll was popular for about ten years from 1955 to 1965, then it all mutated into POP Music, with rock influences.

Obviously Prince isn't Rock and Roll, Jackson Browne isn't Rock and Roll, and it's all just music, why do we have to have some institution to tell us what's good? We don't. The whole concept is idiotic. The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, is a joke to me.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, Let Chubby Checker in so he'll shut the fuck up.

If you guys want to flame an induction, let me ask this: how did Jackson Freakin' Browne get in before Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Sex Pistols, or even the freakin' Doobie Brothers, for Cripes sake?

To each his own ... Jackson Browne would get in on the first ballot eligible in my vote. Skynyrd, the Sex Pistols and the Doobies would never get in on my vote.

I'd take Saturate Before Using, For Everyman, Late for the Sky, The Pretender, Running on Empty or I'm Alive over anything those three bands ever did. But, that's just my opinion.

All I'd say is that if you are trully shocked that Jackson Browne was voted into the R&R HOF, then you probably aren't that aware of the breadth of his work. While I personally would never vote in the Sex Pistols or the Doobies, I certainly wouldn't be shocked if they were voted in.

Check out the lyrics to For a Dancer, or Looking into You, or For Everyman, or Rosie, and maybe that will wash away your shock ... or maybe not.

Finally saw some of the awards thing last night on VH1 - I was wondering about Prince' guitar as well. I come in the office this morning to find out he is in town this week rehearsing for his upcoming tour, and sat in at a local club with a friends' band this weekend! Playing to empty seats in the middle of the night...

What exactly did he do with his Tele

at the end of "WhileMGGWeeps"...?

To me it appeared like he took it off still

playing the last note (maybe he kissed it?),

then threw it up in the air...

Then they cut to a different camera angle

and I didn't see it fall or land...!

It sorta looked like he tossed it back

over his head, but maybe he tossed it

forward to a tech/roadie...?

Was it a funky (nonrealtime) edit that

didn't show the follow-through...?

Did it simply disappear in midair...?

What's your theory...?

BTW, he sure makes playing a guitar solo

look effortless though, doesn't he...?

A small bit of video from the R & R HOF induction on CNN

http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Music/03/15/rock.halloffame.ap/

There is a video linked from the page above; the forum will not allow me to link directly to the video due to the use of parenthesis

I'm all for Jackson Browne and Bob Seger's induction; as well as all the others. Just because folks playing covers are sick to death of some tunes that have been ran into the ground at live gigs, doesn't mean that the original artists of those songs didn't deserve the merit for the creation of them.

I would have thought that George Harrison would have already been inducted into the HOF years ago due to his association with the Beatles; I was surprised to see his name and a NEW inductee. Regardless of his solo contributions, he is among those that reshaped the future of R & R and is more than deserving his credit.

I was never much of a ZZ Top fan, but they certainly had their place as well.

Never could stand to listen to Prince at all, but he stole the crowd during his day. I'm certainly diversified enough to know that I'm not going to like all that are deserving.
