OT: Guilty Pleasures - Regional Fast Food

Recommended Posts

Up in NE Ohio I have enjoyed Panera (franchised bakery, sandwiches, soups) - Good quality breads and comfort food. Also Chipotle (mexican - 5 things on the menu in 4 different varieties - good quality and reasonable prices).

i recently moved to the Memphis area - I haven't found a Panera or chipotle yet. But they do have a local (?) chain of BBQ places called Corky's. And of course the everpresent Waffle House...

Hmmm... in GF we have a few hometown restaraunts, but not a lot of fast food. I guess the Red Pepper would qualify as a local favorite. I like it, but not as much as everybody else here. It's basically a bland tortilla with bland meat and bland beans, lots of cheese and really spicy sauce (if you want). No blend of flavors, though. We've also a Burger Time which is basically a White Castle.

Other chains are what you'd expect (Taco Bell, BK, McD's, etc.) but we also have some of the newer "gourmet" chains like Jimmy John's and Qdoba, which the jury's still out on compared to Chipotle.

Now, back home is some food to die for. Stuff like Jimboy's Tacos, Adalberto's, I really miss Del Taco and Jamba Juice, too. Hell, even Jack-in-the-Box would be nice.

Hello Matt, welcome to the Forums! I lived in GF for three years and left in 95, just a few months before the killer flood. While not "fast food", there was an excellent Mediterranian restaurant in the southeast corner of town, lot of the college professors hung out there, what was the name of it and is it still there, do you know?

But yeah, I don't recall much for fast food there at all.

This took me ages to read, dam it! :D

Tell you what I really love.

Kebab rolls.

Not your normal ones from the kebab shops but the Indian ones.

2 rolls of seasoned minced meat cooked on a skewer and wrapped in a nan bread with salad and yogurt with mint and chilli sauce if you like it.

Yum! :P

If you have never been to East London, there are tons of Indian Kebabish take aways that do all sorts of curries, breads and rice dishes.

Well worth a visit.

I'm hungry now :freak:

Oh and as we are on the subject of food, remember i was on about that nasty black pudding thing some english people have for breakfast thats made of blood? well I found out that white pudding is the other version except its made of the brains of a pig! Disgusting!

We've got something similar, its called "scrapple", although its more of a lunchmeat than a pudding.

We're on page 5, and no one has mentioned Sonic Drive-In? That place ROCKS!

Foot long chili-cheese dogs?

Tater Tots (or tots with cheese) if you don't want fries?

Fruit Slushes TO DIE FOR?

Corn Dogs for the kids...

And you can park outside and order from your car and they'll bring it out to you (at some locations, the carhops even skate).

I love that place. :thu:

Scrapple:

  • Take a pig
  • Make pork chops
  • Make ham
  • Make bacon
  • Make tenderloins
  • Make sausage
  • Make hot dogs
  • Use the ears to make chew toys for the dogs :freak:
  • Take whatever's left over and make scrapple

Tedster, it was between NW 72nd and Barry on HWY9 ( I think) near the Berbiglia. know it?

Hey, Dean...I don't go down that way often. Thanks for the tip though, I'll check it out.

We have them somewhere in Wisconsin as well. I see billboards but I've never seen the actual restaurant.

We still have a few original drive-ins around here. Good greasy burgers, cute girls on rollerskates, outstanding frozen custard.

That's one I forgot about - Kopp's! Any SE Cheeseheads know what I'm talking about. Kopp's has excellent burgers, rings, fries and custard.

Botch,

I've been here since '99, and the only Med restaurant I can think of would have been Giulliana's, an Italian place that opened in '02 but gone now. It was right next to (the site of) the old Toppers ice cream parlor that burned down in 2001. Funny side story: about a week after I got here my suitemates took me to Toppers and had me convinced it was a strip club, what with the flashing sign and the name. Anyway, to make a short story shorter, I ended up disappointed.

Come to think of it now, there are no restaurants on the SE side of town - most everything is along 32nd Ave S. That area has grown up so much in the last 5 years you wouldn't recognize it. If anybody is from the MN/ND area, names like the Green Mill and Buffalo Wild Wings are pretty popular and not bad joints, if ya ask me, don'cha know.
