OT: Guilty Pleasures - Regional Fast Food

Recommended Posts

My apologies to those who have given Waffle House kudos, but I wouldn't feed Waffle House food (if you can call it that) to a stray dog.

I've been to several Waffle Houses in Middle Tennessee and Chattanooga, and I'll never go back. The food was awful each and every time.

Lee, you have great taste in music, guitars and amps, but if that's your idea of great fast food I'll stick to admiring your taste in those other areas. ;):D

And I'm not a fast food snob, either. While McD's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, etc. are not fine dining, there is a time and justification for liking each one of these. I'll neither mistake the first two for great burger joints nor the latter as a great Mexican restaurant, even for fast food. (Chicago has tons of incredible taquieras.. huge portions of great food for pennies.) But they appeal to me for what they are.

But Waffle House is all yours. Enjoy!

I love their pan pizza. Don't expect to feel like moving much after you've eaten there, however.

One thing I did not like though....My family and I stopped at one, when we were in Madison about 4 months ago, that had a play area for kids. I thought my son would enjoy it.

I remember when they used to put some video games in these places. Not anymore...everything revolved around constantly sticking quarters into machines, and trying to earn tickets, which were redeemable for some crap at the counter.

I swear it was like a casino for little kids. It really kind of pissed me off.

Still, the pizza was really good... :thu:

I can't remember where I had Rocky Rococos pizza. I want to say it was when I attended the U. of Iowa, but I'm not sure. I know I ordered za's from Paul Revere's Pizza a LOT in Iowa City. It might have been the 3 months I spent at St. John's Military Academy in Delafield, Wi. That was 20 years ago. :freak:

But I definitely remember Rocky Rococos as great pizza-joint/fast food pizza. :thu:

Now I'm really hungry!

Do they try to hijack the local customs in your area? Imagine a McDonald's "Philly Cheessesteak" [Roll Eyes]

Ha! They did this exactly in NYC last winter. Pretty good, I guess. In TX they do a BBQ burger thing now and then, which is funny 'cuz it has fake "ribs" MOLDED IN to the patty.

You people bigging up Whattaburger are on crack. I'm from Texas and that was where you'd want to go only late when everything else was closed. Their burgers are sub-Dairy Queen, flat little poofs of nothing.

Speaking of Dairy Queen, they need to get it together w/ the franchises in NYC... same with Arby's. None here.

My high school band actually toured Europe for two weeks way back when, and we were surprised to see wine and beer on tap at the European McDonald's! The band director found out about it soon enough but it was cool for two days at least!

McD's trots out the Johnsonville McBratwurst here in Wisconsin every now and then. They're not bad for the uninitiated but the rolls they use are crap. The only real way to enjoy Brats is to boil them in beer and onions, finish them off on a charcoal grill and put them on a toasted french roll with the condiments of your choice. Preferably in a parking lot before a Packer game. :)

I don't think I'd eat anything tubular from the Brat Stop.

When I was living in NJ anytime the guys came over to jam we'd have to take a break and go to White Manna

Little hamburger smothered in onions and cheese. Creates a combo we dubbed greeze. :thu: Fantastic!! I really miss it.

Now that I'm in NC our favorite local place is Goodberry\'s It's just the best ice cream (frozen custard). Get's even better when you make your own concrete mixture.

It comes and goes with the weather:

Wet spring = more acorns

More acorns = more squirrels

More squirrels = McRib (for a limited time only!)

Life in cheeseland ain't all bad. We do have some very good restaurants around here. I don't get out for fast food much other than the occasional Cousins sub so I have to think back a bit to remember some of the better places around here. Now ask me about a bar...

Billster - LMAOROTF!

More because friends of my brother-in-law, when he lived in rural, southern Illinois, did eat squirrel on occasion.

PBB Paul - Smart move keeping your lips to yourself in the Brat Stop. :D

Slightly OT - As for the, "Behold... the power of Cheeseheads" line just north of my inlaw's house...

A very good friend of my father in law owns a business in Antioch. (On the Illinois border with Wisconsin.) He made a bet with one of his Cheesehead buddies on the re-opening day, Monday Night Football game in 2003 at the newly refurbished UFO.. er.. Soldier Field. As had been a regular occurance for the past decade (until this year), the Packers beat the Bears.

The loser of the bet had to paint his business green and yellow, and paint the score in big numbers on several garage doors. The bet required him to keep it that way until this season. :D

Which is just another reason drunk people shouldn't be held accountable for dumb bets made on sporting events. ;)

Well, if you're hungry enough, you'll eat flippin' anything. I don't care WHO you are.

As far as regonal abominations from McDonalds.. I coulda swore once that they offered Bratwurst on the menu. I was probably just seeing things, though.

(ps., this is Wisconsin, the land of cheese, brats n beer).

spokenward: I didn't put ketchup nor mustard on a Vienna, it was a cheapass Dubuque Grocery Store model.

fantasticsound: The Portillo's i was at was near Arlington Heights, iirc. The model T was right side up in this case, though. Fwiw I live in Twin Lakes, WI. If you mapquest it you'll see i'm about 3 miles east from where 12 crosses through the Cheese Curtain.

The loser?!

Half the people in Wisconsin would be proud to paint their houses or businesses that way. It's hilarious. I'm a Packer fan and all but some of the fans here are nuts.

Back to the topic. I really don't eat much fast food. McD's or BK if I need some quick, crappy filler or Cousin's subs if I want something of decent quality. More often though, I try to hit some of wonderful little ethnic places that we have dozens of in any given neighborhood. Benji's Deli is one of the best Jewish Delis around here. Hector's (or La Perla) has great Mexican. Speed Queen has the best barbeque. Luca Pizza has an amazing meat-pie and excellent Calzones. Edwardo's has very good and unusual stuffed pizzas. Genghis Kahn Mongolian Barbeque is always good. Any of the little corner bars have a variety of good quality and quick food. Really, the Milwaukee area has an abundance of excellent restaurants.

I wasn't clear... If they've made the same bet this year, then the Cheesehead's business is now blue and orange! ;):P

Phaeton - You're talking about the Portillos on Dundee Rd, I think. Just a bit off Rte 53, right? Down the street from Sam Ash? That's the one I spend most of my money in as it's a few miles from my brother's house and my old co-writer's homestudio. Every Thanksgiving we visit my inlaws up by you. My wife and her best friend spend the day after Thanksgiving shopping and I drive 45 minutes to see friends and family in that area. We always eat at Portillos. (Especially since you can't get a real hotdog anywhere in Tennessee. )

According to Yahoo maps you're just over 17 miles and half an hour's drive away! Please tell me you were visiting relative, friends... even enemies hundreds of miles from home this past Thanksgiving!

I had plenty of time to jam that Friday night. Doh! :freak:

When I lived in Kansas City, the was a place ( which I am guessing is still there) called 'LC's'. A double cheeseburger from their had so much grease in them that they were rumored to make your eyes googly with oil slicks...But goddam, they were...goooooooooood....

Tedster, it was between NW 72nd and Barry on HWY9 ( I think) near the Berbiglia. know it?

My favourite fast food outlet is the Gourmet Pizza Kitchen in Sydney.

They serve the best salads and wood fired oven pizzas with a twist - like the thai prawn pizza - marinated prawns(shrimp) (big ones not little ones from a can) with a thai spicey salad on a pizza. Or a mexican with guacamole, refried beans and sour cream on a pizza. :) It was also lisensed to sell booze.

My kids used to pester me to take them there everytime I visited Sydney.

cheers

Oh, man I'm getting hungry reading all of these posts. And there isn't jack in the fridge but a jar of pickles. Might have to stroll down the street to Two Brothers for Mexican food. Not a chain, not at all fast.

Now, I must say that I really do miss In N Out Burger. A double double animal style with a chocolate shake would solve my current problem. I'm countless miles too far north for that, regrettably.

Here in the Pacific NW, there is a chain called Burgerville that serves pretty decent FF. It's not at all cheap, though. I have to second an earlier post praising Tacos Del Mar. I've had most of their stuff and it's way good. Fish tacos are truly awesome. If you haven't had them yet, you owe it to yourself to try them. I like the soft tortilla ones with red cole slaw and a slice of lemon to squeeze over it. -drool.

There is a taco stand on Highway 101 in Solana Beach (north San Diego county, coastal) that serves super Mexican takeout. I just remembered the name. Roberto's. Recommended.

In Pasadena, CA I used to go to a buffet named Souplantation that had super fresh very nutritious (although not cheap or filling) food. As it is a buffet, it's almost as quick as fast food.

I want to move back to So. Cal. Almost no one sees the sense in that statement. It is almost universally discouraged as counter-trend. However, the economy/job market in the Pacific NW has been tough sledding for me lately and the sun isn't likely to break through the clouds for about 5 months. And I'm jonesing for an enchilada from El Torito or Joselito's. Reaches for truck keys. Let's see-I could get down I-5 and into Pasadena by Tuesday 6 pm if I just go now...

Sun? SUN???? This time of year it's so foggy you don't see the damn SKY for 6 months...

Man, there's got to be some decent mexican foods up around oswego and the greater portland area... I mean, you can't be more than 10 min away from Beaverton.

GO FORTH AND MASTICATE!!

I agree with you on the job situation though :(

This is why i find myself in WI at the moment.

As far as getting hungry reading this post, i too am hungry for no good reason. Just came from the Cracker Barrel about 5 hours ago, where i got all loaded up on eggs, bacon, bisquits, onion rings and grits. Nothing like breakfast for dinner :D

Though i think i'm going to have to wash this guinness down with some black beans & cheese rolled up in a burrito...

Ok... but the next time I visit I'm leaving it up to you to kidnap PBBPaul. I'll get Pauldil and we hit Portillos, somewhere! [Thumb]

It's a deal!

And afterwards, we should hit a Culver's for some frozen custard or banana splits. w00t!

Well I am sort of late on this thread and truthfully did not want to go read through all the posts but I will toss a few in.

When I lived in Denver it was Chipotle. The first one built was on the Denver University Campus. They have come a long way hehe.

When I was up in Minnesota we went to a Culver's. I can see this place doing a lot of damage to McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's. The menu was huge, the food was better and the Frozen Custard was just killer!

Cool! If we go to the Portillos you've been to, there's a Culvers less than 10 minutes drive from there, in Buffalo Grove or Wheeling. (It's a half mile from my bro's home. ;)

:D Actually, my co-writing partner has his home and studio about halfway between both locations. So we hit Portillos, then jam at the studio, then his Culvers. :thu:

Botch, this is more of an open ended event. I don't know when I'll be back to the Chicago area. But if I'm up that way the same weekend in January as you, I'd be happy to include have you join us. And, if I'm unable to be there, go ahead and snag these guys for lunch yourself. ;) There are quite a few people in the same general area.

The previously mentioned Pauldil, PBBPaul (although he's further north towards Milwaukee), Zeronyne, Emptyness of Youth is in Winthrop Harbor, IIRC, and others.

I usually only get up for a few days at a time, so it's been difficult to take time to see anyone, especially at holidays when others have their own plans, too. Unfortunately, I rarely have time to see all the old friends I'd like to visit with. :(

I hope it works out, though.
