This converter has worked flawlessly for a number of months on my Mac platform.. but no longer. Do you have a converter that works well for you?

I use aTubeCatcher. It's a software program you install. Converts YouTubes into a ton of different formats.

I am using Mac.. and tubeCatcher is microsoft based!

Did you try this one?

I typically also use http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ and haven't had any problems. Did you try using a different browser? Maybe Chrome instead of Safari, or something like that?

Not sure what that is...

does it harken back to DOS?

I can type ( slowly ) if I know how to access a command line

and what to type, I suppose I could!

Thank you

It is up right now. I use it for teaching all the time.

Unfortunately they do shut down for maintenance from time to time, and occasionaly some songs are blocked from it, so then I use "Mediahuman Youtbe to mp3 converter." Mediahuman

If you're a Mac guy I highly recommend the Audio Hijack software. $49, but worth it. It can capture any audio playing on your system, or just within your browser or any other specified application. One nice feature is the ability to set it to auto-split into separate files whenever silence is detected (e.g. for ripping audio from a whole Youtube playlist - just have to rename the files manually when you're done).

I have used Video Download Helper and Flashgot for many years. You should be aware that YouTube constantly makes subtle code changes to defeat these utilities.

Sometimes you have to wait a week or so while the utilities release an update ironing out the latest wrinkle.

John - yes, very much like DOS. Applications->Utilities->Terminal

Installation instructions are here: https://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/download.html - use the first set of instructions.

Once it's installed, you can type

youtube-dl --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc1PHk9FhIk

and it will download the audio file and place it in the current directory (probably your home directory). The tool can do a lot more than that, type "youtube-dl --help" to find out how to download the video as mp4 etc.

Change the youtube URL to match the video whose audio you want. You can cursor up in Terminal to access and edit previously-entered commands.

This kind of stuff still amazes me when I remember what we used to have to go through to learn a tune.

-Buy the album

-use the turntable, possibly slowed to 16

-keep moving the tonearm back to the spot you're trying to transcribe.

Are you guys hip to Seventh String Software's Transcribe!? So ridiculously easy.

I checked out all of these possibilities and they all require you to download and install something. I do not do that. The beauty of youtube-mp3.org is that it didn't require you to download or install anything. What you downloaded was the converted mp3. Quick as a wink, too. Wish there was another site like that.

I just used http://www.listentoyoutube.com. It works like youtube-mp3.org so you don't have to download or install anything. You just paste in the url of the utoob vid. Its downside is that you have push through ads and close irrelevant windows to see the download link. But that's easy to do and you get the mp3 downloaded, click on it to play and it's in your itunes.

Mot to drift too far OT, but when I was at William Paterson College and Thad Jones was on the faculty, I asked him how he learned harmony/arranging. He said he used to listen every week to a Saturday late night broadcast of the Basie band. Imagine that - listen to the radio and work it all out later in your head, from memory.
