Eric Iverson
I am listening at work to a video on Early Heavy Metal (from Britain) including Black Sabbath and numerous others. Not that I was ever a fan of that genre. But one of the singers said: "There is name for other types of singing: alto, tenor, bass, soprano etc. What I do is called SCREAMING!!" I'm glad he cleared that up, LOL. Seriously, I never could get used to those "bastard son of Robert Plant" vocals.
Larryz
Not into screaming...unless it's just a little help from Joe Cocker or Janis Joplin kind of thing... Take care, Larryz
desertbluesman
Ain't a metal fan here. I came up on hard rock, but when it morphed into metal I jumped ship, and went back to blues based rock. dbm If it sounds good, it is good !! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=143231&content=music
Eric Iverson
I like it when James Brown screams, or some gospel singers. And of course, there are what they call BLUES SHOUTERS.... And some of your sax players do similar things.
whitefang
Depends on how you define "metal". Some would argue the word describes ALL music known by that name. Some would say BLUE CHEER was a "metal" band (one critic at the time they came out called it "Speed Rock") Led Zeppelin and other bands like those. Others limit it to those '80's big haired and spandex bands. Indeed, all of them, to ME at least, sounded as if ONE GUY was doing all the vocals and going from band to band using different names. Same with a LOT of bands from the '80's. My kids spent HOURS watching MTV and I couldn't hear much difference in many vocalists from band to band. It was near the same with many of those '80's "New Wave" bands. Someone here once posted a chart of some kind trying to chart the "changes" in metal music, and for one period, they used the term "Cookie Monster" in describing the vocals. Cracked me up! Delta
There was screaming in the 70s also, with Robert Plant, Geddy Lee, Malcolm Young and others. I sometimes cringe when I hear some of it, especially the earlier stuff, but the rest of the music is good enough, that I can get by it. Both Plant and Lee both eventually cut down on the screaming and turned out to be decent vocalists. Young, not so much. whitefang
I never considered Geddy Lee as a "screamer" as much as I did just high pitched. In fact, when I first heard a Rush tune without any DJ intro, I thought it was a song by PAVLOV'S DOG. Dave Surkamp and Lee sounded kinda the same back then. Then you hafta try to distinguish screaming from just a natural "raspiness" in a voice. Like Janis Joplin or Bob Seger and them. Even when THEY sang at a lower or slower level, you could hear some "rasp". Throw MITCH RYDER in that group too. Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! Guitarzan
It is true that some singers try to mirror the aggressiveness of the music in their voice, but not every metl bnd resorts to that. I think the trend to go all cookie monster is slowly changing. Early A7X was screaming but since "city of evil" Matt has pretty well sang. Joey Belladonna of Anthrax has always had an awesome set of pipes, I like it. Of course we only get exposed to the stuff the media gives us unless we actually listen to albums and hear the rest. Rob Halford is one of the finest vocalists period. Judas Priest has recorded music on many releases that back that up and would surprise you. Google judas priest ..before the dawn or epitaph to hear some great vocals http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will
Guitarzan
I can only imagine how big Dave Mustaine with his teeth clenched gritty almost punk vocals would be received here. Side note ...all the vocalists I mentioned sound nothing alike... http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will
Dannyalcatraz
As someone who considers himself a vocalist before all other musical labels, I can pick out all those guys, and apprciate them for wha they could & could not do. I actually helped someone win a radio contest by identifying a band based on the song the DJ played...on its first spin. Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a.
