NPD: EHX Stereo Memory Man w/Hazarai.

My FLMS was having a sidewalk sale yesterday, and my bandmate and I decided to go see what was on blow-out. There were more than a few cool deals, but as I was still looking for a Delay pedal, I was drawn to the EHX.

It's much cooler than I originally thought, and I was digging into some of the features before I even looked at the Manual. One of the coolest things; you can combine all but one of the Delay modes with looping. Dial up the the 300ms w/Mod Delay mode, play a short rhythm riff, and capture it in a loop (up to 30 seconds). Then, you can change Delay modes, while the loop is still running, or go into Loop Mode, and change the Speed & Direction of the Loop. I was able to get some of the kinds of effects Bill Frisell gets out of his ancient 16-Second Delay, this way. I have the Boss DD-20, and the Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler, and neither of them let you do anything quite like this.

You can store one preset for each mode, so you have essentially 16 different sounds available, the presets, and the sounds represented by the current knob setting: when you load a Preset, the Preset ignores the knob settings. In Loop Mode, as with the other presets, the device saves the knob settings as the preset, not the audio loop.

The Decay knob has different functions, depending on the Delay mode: In Loop Mode, it lets you switch between Forward and Reverse playback of your loop. There's also a Filter knob, which lets you change the tone of your loops and echoes darker or lighter ( via LPF or HPF) as they repeat. I got some great spooky tones adjusting those two knobs with the different modes.

No, it's nowhere near as deep as the Pigtronix Echolution 2. I'm still holding out for the new model, the Ultra Pro, probably after the holidays, but right now, I'm very happy with the EHX in my rig.

Does the EHX really have "everything"; of course not, but "everything" doesn't always have to mean every thing. You won't get a Ham & Cheese sandwich at a kosher deli, either; don't even ask. The EHX has some very cool features, good Delay sounds, and it's a lot of fun.

I know you say you're holding out for the Ultra Pro, but the "regular" Echolution 2 is the Stupid Deal of the Day at Musician's Friend today. "Only" $209 while they last.

Thanks for the heads-up, Danzilla. Sorry to say, I can't jump on that deal today, or I would. FWIW, you should be able to upgrade this model (the Filter Pro) to the Ultra Pro firmware, but you won't have the dual LED display.
