Damn.

Question...what's going on with the high held note during parts of the solo? It doesn't look like he's playing it.

He is holding it with his pinky.

watch his pinky at 2:26 to 2:28. he lifts the inside of his hand but the pinky never leaves the key.

I think the coolest thing is that the bass guitar player sits out the first half of the solo so Chester can do his thing while simultaneously kicking/LH bass. Amazing playing - although I was impatient for him to move beyond the blues scale. Which he did with impressive results.

Cheers, Mike.

I was there for this gig. I believe the year was 2013, and the venue was the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland Oregon.

It took them many years to give Chester a solo spot. Actually he may have been out with Santana, granted. But this spot ( in front of 20, 000 people ) was a long time coming.

By the way the front of house sound wasn't that great that day. Chester did a workshop later that was much better, though he did it on a Nord C1.

If you notice, the drummer is playing hi hat wide open, (chunking away on straight eighth notes) not really the linear funk that David Garibaldi made such a critical part of this style of playing. Too bad, because there are a lot of Portland drummers who would have done justice to this opportunity, and who would have greatly benefitted for such an opportunity.

It's good to hear Chester still going strong, and I am glad he is doing gigs where he is featured.

I kind of do that same thing.
