Bass Arp for Kronos

I need to cover "Here As In Heaven" on Sunday:

It opens with a pad and bass arp. The arp is easier to hear on verse 1 at 0:38.

I want to use the Kronos because it covers the pads better than the PX-5S. I thought I could take one of Busch's excellent synth patches and modify it to get the arp. How hard could a repetitive one-note arp be?

Well, I'm feeling pretty inadequate. Nothing I tried worked. If I had time, I'd start from the beginning and learn the various step sequencer features. But I've got a lot going on at work ...

Is there a simple way to build a program that covers this bass arp?

I did this VERY quickly. I'm using a SAW (or SQUARE) LFO to generate the pulse. It is modulating the filter but you might add a bit to amp. It uses LFO1 and note that it is set to KEY SYNC so every time you press a new note it will re-sync, which I assume you want. I'm hearing "tempo" of the pulse at 63. If you're syncing to a track with a BPM then change the LFO to be synced to the BPM and set to the proper time base note.

The Modulation is found in FILTER==>FILTER MOD.==> FILTER A MODULATION. Notice I'm using AMS MIXER 1. Here is where you can set the intensity of the pulse. If you go to AMS MIXER 1 you'll see I'm smoothing the shape of the LFO. You can play with these and also play with changing the LFO to SQUARE. You can also try the SHAPE in MIXER TYPE at the top of AMS MIXER 1 page. The AMS MIXER is just allowing you to alter the contour of the shape of the LFO.

I spent very little time on the actual sound. It's using a single OSC SAW with a SubOsc.

Busch, thank you for this. I'm at work, so I can't try it out until this evening.

Thanks for the comment about the AMS Mixer. I noticed that you used it in your Kronos synth patches. Pretty sure this is what I didn't understand when I was editing your patches and need to read the docs about.

I'll want to sync to BPM so that I can change tempo easily.

Again, mucho thanks! :thu:

This program worked out perfectly. Starting with a simple patch like this was much easier than trying to simplify your other patches.

I made a few small tweaks: took the pitch down an octave (I'm playing it on a 61), changed waveform to square to add more harmonics, changed to mono from poly, etc.

Mapped it into the lowest octave of a AP/EP/pad combi and adjusted levels. Sounds great!

Many thanks, Busch. PM me if you're ever in San Diego. I owe you a few rounds.

For anybody needing to do other very basic arp patterns on the Kronos, unfortunately the typical way to do one is in Karma which is less than intuitive. However, the polysix arpeggiator is very straight forward - up/down/up&ado when, 1 oct/2 oct/Full. For basic arp's that's my go-to engine.

The patch was awesome today. Played through two JBL PRX735 1500W speakers with matching PRX715XLF JBL subs installed this week in the house. The bass arp had chest-thumping power. Bass player and guitar players didn't even try to compete.

It's hard to describe how good the piano, pads, and arp sounded. Another confirmation that great amplification matters.
