Outkaster
What keyboard is Cornelius Bumpus playing. It's on top of what looks like one of the Bill Beer chops? DanL
I was going to say some kind of string ensemble. The Real MC
ARP String Ensemble IV (aka Solina). Caught a glimpse of the front panel badge, no question.
bennyray
Definitely an ARP String Ensemble. I owned one in about 1979. Very expensive for just a string sound but everything was back then.
zxcvbnm098
Yeah, String Ensemble. I happened to be at that actual show and remember walking up and checking out all the gear before they came on stage (a rare concert at the lagoon on the UCSB campus). I also remember seeing the chopped Hammond and wondering if that was something Hammond offered? It's so nice to have all the answer to the universe now at my fingertips... Outkaster
Yeah it's a Bill Beer chop I am pretty sure. That band was at it's tightest there musically and vocally. Tiran didn't do that show on bass. I am not sure if he was in the band at that point? "Danny, ci manchi a tutti. La E-Street Band non e' la stessa senza di te. The Real MC
Definitely an ARP String Ensemble. I owned one in about 1979. Very expensive for just a string sound but everything was back then. Just checked out this demo (audio is good quality and not from a cheesy camera mic) ARP String Ensemble Never owned one, but it seems the best range is the top two octaves. Lower than that and the ensemble effect is a bit too intense for my taste. But no one ever captured that silky Solina high string sound. Eminent had a patent on the ensemble effect; other string machines used a variation to skirt the patent but they never did sound the same. Years ago I researched the architecture of the Solina Ensemble effect (AH and patent) and I replicated it on my Korg SDD-3300. It's a stereo FX. Like the Solina, you just feed it a tinny organ sound and out comes a string ensemble. The ensemble modulation isn't as deep as the Solina but it sounds better over a wider range. zxcvbnm098
Tiran had left a year or so earlier. And in fact, Pat would leave shortly after this run of shows. But then Pat came back and did a "farewell" tour the next year. And yes, that version of the band was really tight. They sounded awesome that day.... The Real MC
Tiran didn't do that show on bass. I am not sure if he was in the band at that point? Patrick Simmons was the only original member at that point. The band was disbanding and 1982 was their farewell tour. Tiran was a real inventive bass player. timwat
Had an ARP String Ensemble too - by the time I acquired my used one, the case had been beat to hell. A carpenter friend of mine took out the guts and built it into a shorter, lighter, more compact cabinet for me, which made the schlep a little less onerous. A one trick pony, but it did that one trick really, really well. ..

Doerfler
Interestingly enough, J, I can't put my Arp String Ensemble on top of my A 100 as it creates a loud hum, shielding issue, I know. I used this video you posted as the sound source for when I sold my first Yamaha CP 70. I might be the only person to ever buy a second one. So today my String Ensemble sits on top of my CP 70 and it doesn't ever move.

DanL
Definitely on the Floyd stuff. I have a nice Solina emulation I use in my FA08 for stuff like the middle section of Dogs. I have a 2nd phased string sound that I can bring in and out with the expression pedal on it as well. One without Michael and one with him. He gave the band an R&B sound which was a little less country then they had been. They balanced the two styles for a while though, I have to say see pretty well. As you notice everytime they did harmonies his voice was so distinctive you couldnt hide it. He is one hell of a piano player.
