Oldchella

I considered going just to see Sir Paul, who I missed last time he came through. Everyone says he's just crushing it right now. But large festival crowds really test my patience. I enjoyed Phish Festival 8 which was held at the same Coachella polo fields, but it was also way undersold so there was plenty of room to move around, lines were not too bad, etc.

I know a lot of people heading out to Oldchella but I'ma let this one pass me by. I'm going camping with friends instead.

I know I really must be getting old because for most of my adult life I wouldn't have considered missing it for anything! Now it's just too much bread, time and travel (if it were here in the NY area where I didn't have to take multiple days off work and fly to Cali, I imagine I'd have sprung for it). McCartney and the Stones are my favorite rock acts to see (again, damn I'm old) and I usually don't miss a chance to see either, seeing them on the same bill would be amazing. Have seen Sir Paul this year though already, hope the Stones come back around after they release their new album they officially announced today.

My buddy Stu Kimball is playing with Bob Dylan and invited me up as his guest, so I'm gonna go up and see them and the Stones. Will probably stay over Friday night and see Sir Paul on Saturday as well.

Hoping to find other folks I know who are going, but I have yet to be able to find even one. I think it may be true that most of the target audience is too damn old to do the festival thing.

As a friend points out, that band has now been together longer than the Beatles, and longer than Wings. They sound tight and even edgy. And McCartney is clearly aware that he is the last "real" hinge-point back to the Beatles, and also that he had a lot of fluff in his solo career, so the set lists are basically, "Every great song he's ever been associated with, even ones he didn't write, and none of the crappy ones that he did write."

He had a little auto-tune or ADT assistance at the beginning of the set when I saw him (maybe even tracks, couldn't tell), but settled into a monstrous and explosive set that made me happy I'd waited until this stage in his career to finally see him. Though I did think it was funny that he had to Tele-Prompt-R words for things like "Yesterday." You'd think he'd know that one pretty well by now...

Now out! "Mind the Gap," a 24-song album of new material.

You're probably right, but I'd prefer to think that it was neither auto-tune nor "ADT assistance" but rather his drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. supporting/helping on some of the lead vocals. Paul makes a pretty big point of saying everything is real and live and as a lifelong McCartney fan/apologist/worshipper I need to believe him.

Don't know if it's true, but supposedly Chuck Leavell has to reteach some of the Stones tunes to Mick and the boys every time they put a tour together.

It's a pretty pricey event for the average joe, especially when considering accommodations in the area. I think that's the real reason people are staying home....not age. Those of means...and there are plenty to make it worth their (the promoters) while, will be there spending.

Interesting article in the LA Times about the event today. They mentioned the rumor that Zeppelin was offered $14M to do this show....turned it down obviously.

The article mentioned that this thing is so profitable, it will happen again. With whom, that is the only question. But this is not the last of this event....

He is the musical director, Mick gave him the responsibility.

Oh that's pretty bad.

The past few tours they've pulled out songs they never did live or hadn't in years, so any band would have had to relearn material like that.

I agree... but it would be surprising if they can't remember lyrics of their "everyday" songs. :idk

I don't think Paul included "Junior's Farm" here in NY back in August, one of my favorites but I've seen him do it once or twice over the last few tours. (I could be wrong, maybe he did it this time too, not sure.) He skips the verse about "the president" ("we all chipped in for a bag of cement"), I'm pretty sure it's because he likes/supports the current US prez and doesn't want there to be any confusion!

Pre-Ipad Chuck had a couple of 3 inch binders of all their material in there as a back up when they needed to teach or relearn old songs. It started on the 1989 Steel Wheels tour if I remember correctly.

First of all, let me just say that I've never seen anything like that in my life. The venue was immense, the sound was killer, all the bands were amazing and it was certainly worth being there.

That being said - seeing six blockbuster concerts in three days takes more energy than one might surmise. By the Roger Waters set, we were pretty surprised by how many people had already bailed...and I'm way more burnt than I've ever been after a musical event.

I live only mile from the Polo Grounds so I can hear everything from my patio, even the sound checks. Here's what the folks who attended the first weekend are saying: Dylan, just OK...did not engage the crowd at all, played mostly keys, a few of his "hits"

Stones: Kicked ass...many saying they have never sounded better...Friday they opened with Start Me Up and never looked back. Neil Young: Sounding great, joined Macca last night for a mini rock jam, crowd loved it. The Who rocked the house, also Roger Waters did well.....but the overall huge crowd faves were the Stones, Neil and Paul. This event continues again next weekend...estimated revenue from Desert Trip is $150 million easily topping the previous record of around $50 million. Street talk is the bands got between $5 million and $10 million. So far Desert Trip has been a huge success....there are some bargain priced tics out there, one reason is after the initial sell out when they put up the grandstands they found they had more seats and/or standing room to sell. That combined with the automated scalper computer buys that the scalpers are now dumping at discount prices brought all the prices down.
