A BREAKTHROUGH!

Most of you are aware of the trouble I had with playing after a "mini stroke" back in '14. But just yesterday....

I managed to push(without any "forced" effort) my playing endurance to nearly a HALF HOUR before getting "flubbity fingered" and weak hand. Barre chords are still a problem though. The fingering of them strains and causes some pain in the tendon(s) along the "carpal" region just below the left wrist. Sorry I don't know the "official" name of that area, but hopefully you get what and where I mean.

I wasn't playing anything specific, just noodling around with fast chord changes and some "bluesy" type runs and stuff. Not going for great speed or anything like that. Mostly repetition of some runs, sorta like excercizes. Maybe my fidgeting around with those tiny parts and thin tubing in connecting my wife's PEG-tube feeding system helped. AND working those tiny buttons on the PUMP for her feeding too. I'm not sure. But, I'll take ANY progress for ANY reason!

I've been suffering with some kind of arthritis and/or gout that is affecting my fretting hand...I've had some success with Evening of Primrose oil, Borage oil and Tart Cherry supplements. They all seem to fail me after awhile though. So, I have a new recipe called ALEVE! When in doubt, take a pill LOL! I started taking one at night and one in the morning of the 12 hour time release. Now I'm just taking one in the morning (or at night when I have a brain fart and forget LOL!). So far it's been a big help as far as the pain goes. My back, neck and shoulders are feeling better too!

I really, really sympathize with you guys and every guitar player who experiences problems like these. Nothing hurts worse (both physically and mentally) more to us guitar pickers than not being able to play.

I started back when I was around 60 with a little stiffness in my middle finger, left hand. It progressed slowly, but by the time I turned 70, the arthritis had made it impossible to use that finger. Since it has slowly hit other fingers and is just now beginning to affect my right hand.

Thank God for steel guitars. :)

+1 Doc on the steel guitar and on the guitar pickers not being able to play syndrome! I have a square neck dobro and my keyboard to fall back on when I have to throw in the towel some day! Till then, I'll keep on trying to play that old guitar as long as I can...

Jeez, Doc.

Not being able to use the middle finger would make driving a car a bit difficult these days. :D

But in seriousness, I'm glad( and seemingly lucky) that there's no PAIN in my fingers, just the frustration of not always being able to CONTROL them adequately. It sometimes makes it interesting when trying to make PHONE CALLS too. :D

THat sounds like good news fang. To all I too have had very minor soreness or stiffness but rarely in my hands. I get it more in the knees and ankles. A couple naproxen and usually a day or so later I am much better. Lately my problem is I am using all my spare time remodeling a cabin and after a three day weekend I hurt in places I did not know could hurt but also I realize I am totally neglecting my guitars. Thanks for the supporting words guys.

Two days later and I'm still at the half hour mark. Hopefully, this means there'll be no backsliding.
