Jazz+
"Spark" is a 2016 album release by Hiromi and her fusion trio. This is 10th album by Hiromi, age 37, as a leader. "Wake Up and Dream" is beautiful solo piano piece that opens with a simple Eb diatonic hymn-like prelude in Drop 2 voicings . Then the 4 note trance like ostinato pattern begins with only it's roots changing; next enters a very simple yet beautifully rendered melody in half notes over the ostinato. The solo section uses a left hand in legato calypso rhythm in 16th note division starting at 4:50 (it's not an even waltz pattern although she plays it so unusually smooth that at at first listen you might assume it is a waltz. Rather, its's the Latin tresillo pattern; always excellent for any tempo - Monty Alexander always uses it when playing Latin style solo piano and it works in swing just as well.) Later at 4:50, after the stop time interlude, there's a nice nod to Ravel's Piano Concerto in G (2nd movement).
