BenLoy
Hi all, been awhile since I posted here--but this stuff blew my mind. In case you don't know, Squarepusher has always been a supah-bad bassist who always slipped some super-tasty bass playing into his insane electronic compositions. Now's he's got a band bad enough to play the twisted music he created with a computer live: [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] Tour Dates: http://warp.net/news/shobaleader-one-us-headline-dates/
jeremy c
I don't think I could perform with strobe lights on my head or go to show with the performers doing that. It would trigger migraine headaches. So I think I'll pass on the show at the Independent (which is a good place to see a show except there are no seats.) Free download of my cd!. Flemtone
Interesting, to say the least. Very proficient players, intriguing stageshow, really good writing and definitely several steps above most of the new music I'm hearing these days. That said, the music didn't grab me. Don't get me wrong - it's great to see players really tearing it up (and they do), but maybe it's just not my cuppa tea. Fast is great, precision is great, but it's almost too controlled. Hey, don't listen to me - I have the same problem with Zappa. *ducks head, runs from room* Play. Just play.
Bottom End
I couldn't get into the first song. IT's got just about everything that keeps me from getting into electronica, and most jazz, just a little too random and incoherent for me. The second song was much better, it reminded me of some classic Al Dimeola tracks, but I think it was too much of the same thing, for too long. The Third song starts of strong, but gets repetitive fast. There is a lack of dynamics, and some catchy fills, but it's all part A, without a part B, or a bridge. If I don't feel like the song is going anywhere, I'll start wondering just how much longer I have to wait to arrive. So, I might look up a few more songs, but I wouldn't spend a night at a whole show, technically great playing, but it never quite breaks through the wall and grabs me. "Call me what instrument you will, though you can fret me, yet you cannot play upon me.'-Hamlet Guitar solos last 30 seconds, the bass line lasts for the whole song.
