ksoper
The System 8 is getting all the press, but this little wonder has my attention. Do I need it? No. Do I want it? For $349, hell yeah. That's got holiday gift written all over it. Leonard from Kosmic does a great presentation of it. [video:youtube]

CEB
Woah. A VP-330 clone? That is cool. The SVC-350 and VP-330 were awesome. What is the polyphony, 4 voice? I'm interested but I don't expect it to be close to the original. I have 4 vocoder boards already. timwat
I have a VP 7 module, which serves all the vocoder I'll ever need (I find it's like garlic, a very little as an accent goes a long way). [video:youtube] ..
RABid
I'm a bit torn. Two years ago I would have jumped on it. Now I'm pretty happy with the vocoder on the Ultranova. Would like to hear a comparison between the two before making a final decision. This post edited for speling. GovernorSilver
I admittedly ignored the VP-03 until I read this article, which reminds us the original VP wasn't just a vocoder, but also came with a string machine section. http://cdm.link/2016/09/roland-boutique-wasnt-303-909-might-interesting/ Also there's this bit: The VP-03 breaks with tradition, though, in a wonderful way, with two new features. First, theres a step sequencer making the VP the love child of the vocoder and the 909. Then, in the most delightful surprise on the unit, Roland added a sampler. The sampler and step sequencer work together. Hold down a step, record something into the mic, and then you can retrigger that slice from the step sequencer and/or keyboard. RABid
At least this one has a keyboard available. That is my disappointment with the Aira version. This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page

Yeah, the add-on that you'll probably have to pay extra for. If I got this baby I'd probably just get the module by itself.
seanl
Is this instrument something like what Chicane used in the beginning of this song? Would the VP-03 be able to dupe this? 2 Korg M3-73's, Korg WS AD, Radias, , Kurz PC3LE7, Alesis QS6 + QS7.1 used for MIDI controllers. J. Dan
No. Most of my keyboards have vocoders built in. Most of my effects have vocoders available. I don't need to buy a one trick pony that does what I can already do. Dan Acoustic/Electric stringed instruments ranging from 4 to 230 strings, hammered, picked, fingered, slapped, and plucked. CEB
What was cool with the old Roland's was the control and definition you could get with the 11 band vocoder. But this doesn't have that. GovernorSilver
It's not just a vocoder. It also has a string machine section, plus the other sem-hidden features mentioned in the CDM article.
CEB
Yes just like the VP-330 but it doesn't have 49 voice polyphony. GovernorSilver
I actually like the string sounds better on this thing than on Waldorf's string machine emulator module.

GovernorSilver
This video covers the step sequencer and sampling feature in more detail than the other videos. Sequencer coverage starts around 9:00. Sampling around 10:30. Some complaining on various website/forums about no external audio and the 100ms sampling time. Seems like nobody noticed the included mic actually plugs into an XLR jack - nothing says you have to plug in that mic, and only that mic. According to the author of this video, polyphony is 6 rather than the usual 4. [video:youtube]
CEB
The extra 2 voices is huge in this case. The 330 was a big sound instrument you could in effect layer 3 engines with it.
