konaboy
Hi, thought some of you might enjoy having a shot at my "guess the mystery synth challenge". I thought that the series Stranger Things was a bit daft but the 80's synth-based soundtrack definitely caught my attention. Check it out if you have Netflix. Anyway, here's a cover of the main theme played on a synth that I recently picked up. Any guesses? Put your answer in the comments! http://img.youtube.com/vi/Ntq3Nwe8Zos/0.jpg hang out with me at woody piano shack
ABECK
Can you confirm that it's a hardware synth, (as opposed to a VI)?
ABECK
Can the answer be found in your unboxing vid? (hehe)
konaboy
@abeck, yeah of course it's a hardware synth, I thought that was self explanatory... Nice try, but I haven't unboxed this one for you yet. hang out with me at woody piano shack
ABECK
Oh, I've seen people get tricky with this stuff..."Actually, it's not a real Rhodes at all....." So, my guess is OB-6, only because I WANT it to be true.
kelp
Ha! Some lucky synth manufacturer is about to get a sales boost! Well done. I throw my hat in the ring with the JD-XA. Feels like buying a lottery ticket though! Roland Fantom 06; Yamaha P-125; QSC K10; Cubase 13 Pro; Windows
konaboy
@kelp, glad you liked the track, yeah it turned out to be a pretty nice demo. After listening myself I realize it's a very difficult challenge. I think the reveal might come as a surprise to you. All the more respect to whoever gets it. I bought this synth second-hand btw, which makes it even harder. But I think another owner of the same synth should be able to recognise it. hey, thanks for checking out the vid and participating! hang out with me at woody piano shack
timwat
Man, that sounds nice. But yeah, very hard - it could be anything from a Nord Lead to a Casio PW to a Yamaha PSR. Whatever it turns out to be, nice work. ..
ABECK
Second Hand - rules out my OB6 idea. I'll go with DW8000 then. The chorus on the low notes seems similar to what I remember on that board.
DulceLabs.com
I thought that the series Stranger Things was a bit daft I am going to guess my your use of the term "daft" you are from the UK. Maybe the fascination with the series is a US thing due to all the 80's American pop culture stuff... :idk If you aren't familiar with movies like "Firestarter", "ET", "Goonies" and several other US movies from that era, it may not resonate. Anyway, didn't mean to derail. Glad you liked the soundtrack though!
konaboy
apologies for a frustrating challenge, hope the music & the upcoming reveal will compensate i'm having a lot of fun seeing the guesses coming in. daft, yes I'm a Brit. But rest assured, ET, close encounters etc were equally popular in the UK. Kids of my generation rode chopper bikes ("raleigh grifter" over here), skateboards, communicated on CB radio and wore the same hairstyles & clothes. Nah, it was the OTT supernatural effects that were a bit hard to swallow. But the nostalgic 80's vibe kept me coming back for more. cheers. hang out with me at woody piano shack
Tom Williams
Staying OT for a bit, I thought Stranger things did an above average job of showing the "normal" side of the 80's -- something besides the Miami Vice Ugly Pastels color scheme that most 80's settings portray. But yeah, the story itself was, uh, daft. The synth sound track reminds me a bit of demo recordings I heard (in 1980!) of the Prophet 10. -Tom Williams {First Name} {at} AirNetworking {dot} com PC4-7, PX-5S, AX-Edge, PC361
BernMeister
My guess, either a Korg MS2000 or a Novation Supernova. ...on second listen, I'm tending to lean more on the Korg.
fjzingo
Really difficult to guess. The digital sounding FM voice kind of sound towards the end made me a bit confused... so I just chance it Korg DW8000. /Fred Cantaloop Soulfetch Soulbox

konaboy
I've really enjoyed seeing the suggestions. But I realise this challenge is too hard and nobody has got it right yet! We need a winner so I'm gonna give you some clues - 1) I bought the synth used but it's still in production today 2) It's at least 8 note poly 3) It has full sized keys OK, let's start round 2, reveal in 1 week!! hang out with me at woody piano shack

iluvchiclets
I can't figure out what the keyboard is, especially by the initial opening pad sound - it must be a keyboard I haven't played, because that is an unusual chorus effect. It sounds like zero-through mild flanging or chorus. It sounds too modern to be a DW8000 or something of that vintage. I hope it's not an Ultranova, because I own one of those and I should know that keyboard That chorus effect sounds very unique. Electro 5, NI Kontrol S61/49, MX49, PC3, Rev2, Prologue, Pro3, Juno-DS, Mopho Keys, SE02, drums, tons of synth software, guitars, amps, and pedals...help me!! konaboy
guys, thanks for the bump! true, i promised a reveal in two weeks. I have the reveal video ready to go with a placeholder to announce the winner but nobody has guessed correctly yet... quite incredible. no more clues, apart from stating that all guesses so far are wrong. that narrows it down quite a bit... Final chance for fame and fortune, guess again! PS. no promises about the fortune part. hang out with me at woody piano shack
