That signature Prince Linn Drum sound

It's widely known that Prince used the Linn drum machine extensively on albums like purple rain. There's a particular sound that I hear in many of his songs. I've listened to tons of Linn drum audio demos and samples and haven't hear it. I think I remember hearing long ago that it was one of the drum sounds retuned quite a bit. As an example, in Let's Go Crazy, it's the littl roll you hear at the end of every other measure. Can anybody identify exactly what that was? Looking for an answer like "LM-1 Snare detuned" or something of that nature.

I've gotten in the ballpark in the past by detuning factory drum samples in various keyboards, but it would be cool to have the real thing. There are some Linn Drum sample packs available for purchase....but again, nothing in any demos sound like that to me.

Francis Preve (contributing ed to the mag) would know for sure, but is it either the rimshot or clap completely retuned and processed?

That's the first demo I heard that sounds like it has the sound in it, and it's cool that it's free, but only for Live? So I'd have to buy t to get the free sample? Not clear which sound that is thoug I'm sure you're right about the rimshot or clap. Says they were going to deconstruct in July issue. I guess maybe I shouldn't have given up on my subscription since they are actually putting in content that is useful to me again, time to resubscribe, but I missed July. If anybody can confirm for sure which sound that is, I'll buy a reasonably priced sample set in wav form that includes it. I'm not afraid to spend money, but path of least resistance is important to me!

I think the one you're talking about was the sidestick sample tuned down an octave. IIRC, later versions of the Linndrum included it as a preset called "Purple Sidestick."

I was typing as you wer posting....that's good info, thanks!

cool!!

Way back in the day when we covered Prince tunes from Purple Rain when they were new, I used what I had:

A Sequential Tom running thru a Yamaha Rev 7. Lots of reverse gate, etc. :)

You may have seen my other thread about filling in with my old 80s band. The drummer we had when I was in the band played electric drums, even though he despised them (Simmons hexagon pads....basically plywood and rubber with plastic shells, painted like Eddie Van halen's guitar....through a Roland v-drum module.....acoustic cymbals and HH), and even out of a modern module, he managed to get that sound pretty close on one of his pads. That drummer was a real A-Hole, foul mouthed, and caused us incidents with management, sound guys, and patrons, but makes me laugh to this day and is still one of my best friends....even after coming to blows after a gig. New drummer plays acoustic drums. Period. Want the sound? Sequence, done.

I use to get the exact sound from a Sequential DrumTracks. The trick was tuning the rim shot way down. A cool feature of the DrumTracks was the ability to store tuning by note. I use to create rolls that would start with low tuning and gradually rise. A feature missing on too many modern machines.

This post edited for speling.
