Battery powered 'board?

Bill Spencer

Recommended Posts

I occasionally need a battery powered 'board for various outdoor situations, as well as for gigs where I have to have a separate setup in a different room for dinner, etc. I bought a Yamaha Piaggiero NP-32 which is cheap, and fine, but now I have a gig where I need to split for LH bass. So I'm looking for a 'board that:

 can be battery operated

can split, with defineable split point and octave transpositions for the two ranges

built-in speakers for practice in hotel rooms, etc. and really quiet small dining room sets

I've ordered a Yamaha NPv-80 "Arranger" keyboard which seems to do all that and is around $400.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

One of the PX-5S's lauded features. But yeah, you already know this I suspect because you'd need a battery amp as well. What do forum members know about their other lines... Is there a WK that will fit the bill? 7600 takes 6 D cell batteries.

7600? WK?

And at the risk of appearing too picky, the Casio is WHITE. Yeech....

OK just investigated the Casio line and ordered the WK 6600 (its black!). Thanks for the point in the right direction.

Cool. The 7600 comes in black as well, I've actually never seen it in white! :) although, it doesn't surprise me it exists!

Here's the way I do it:

Grab the cs and check out the Roland cube amps - they have a newer one listed as a bass amp with 4-4" speakers.....could give a better bottom end.

1967 B-3 w/(2) 122's, Nord C1w/Leslie 2101 top, Nord PedalKeys 27, Nord Electro 4D, IK B3X, QSC K12.2, Yamaha reface YC+CS+CP

There are more battery powered amps coming out lately (other than the mini guitar amps), that could be suitable for keyboard use. It used to be just Roland, but now there are also things like the Mackie Freeplay, Denon Envoi Go, and Behringer MPA40BT-Pro. I'm curious to hear people's experiences with these. There's getting to be more choices for boards with batteries (besides the PX5S and Roland DS mentioned above, there's also the Korg Kross), though the OP is looking for a board that is self-contained with its own powered speakers.

I thought the NP-V80 was pretty nice. Piano sound wasn't as good as the NP-30 (and I assume that the NP-31/32 have the same or better as that) and it lacked the MIDI jack of the NP-30 (USB only), but the sounds and features were nice for the price and travel weight. I liked its sounds better than the WK Casio of the time, but I haven't heard the current Casio.

Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our now not-so-new new video at https://youtu.be/3ZRC3b4p4EI is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out! And hopefully I'll have something new here this year. ;-)
