The left ear bud syncs with your device over Bluetooth for both L and R audio. The left ear bud syncs with the right ear bud to kick over right audio. This might be a better design than others in that communication with the source device is handled by one bud.

Hmmm, what's the issue with that? latency I assume right? There are other bluetooth headphones on the market being used with IEMs?
