whitefang
Sir Mack Rice, Funk artist and composer of such flagship funk/soul tunes like "Mustang Sally" and Respect Yourself" died Monday of Alzheimer's. Early on, he performed with a vocal group called THE FALCONS with Wilson Pickett and Eddie Floyd. In later years, it was Pickett who made "Mustang Sally" a hit. Basement/garage bands back in the day used to try to put "Mustang Sally" in their repertoires. Mr. Rice was 82 years of age. Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! Whitefang Certainly my basement/garage band used to try to put "Mustang Sally" in our repertoire. I never knew who the composer was until now. Eric Iverson
I haven't THAT song in years, LOL. I like Buddy Guy's version with Jeff Beck; those two guys are going to play together soon in NYC. Should be well worth seeing. "Respect Yourself" - wasn't it the Staple Singers who did that one?
Caevan O’Shite
Another milestone... I've always loved that song, a great chestnut and standard, despite many players' lament that it'd become a cliche too often played by bands and at open-mic jams... Unlike some such songs, I never got tired of it... whitefang
@Eric--- Yes, it was the Staple Singers who did that gem. Too bad too many people seemed to ignore that advice.
