Another custom case build thread...

Hi guys,

I always enjoy the build progress threads that come up when someone is making something a bit custom so I thought I'd start one to document a case build that I'm doing at the moment. Building a case for my Nord C2D that will function as a playing enclosure, with the help of a guitarist friend of mine who happens to also work as a cabinet maker. Not going for a replica B3 cabinet look, just a nice case with nice wood that will make a great looking instrument and have a bit of that 'mystery' factor live.

It'll increase the total dimension of the Nord by adding in some more width where the preset octave keys are missing, this'll be a compact mixer/effect pedal/ipad for charts shelf. Huon pine cheek blocks, back panel and front rail. Ply everything else, will be stained walnut. I'll probably spray paint the interior parts black. First photo of the process taken yesterday!

Thought I'd update with a progress shot. Panels have been stained. Foam inserts attached. Case hardware arrived. This is a rough assembly just to show how it'll go together, nothing glued or screwed yet. Those thin supports are just to keep the lid from falling through. Hopefully be able to get the rest done over the next week or so. Front rail will be done with the huon pine, currently a ply board I'd originally machined but we ended up with more pine!

Assembly and finishing time.

update - got a bit of time in the shop today. Glue joins done. Some drill joins still to do. Starting to look loosely like an organ shell!

Alright. After much longer than I had originally hoped, the case was finally finished off. Exams, work, health issues from both myself and the guy who was helping me build it didn't help in finishing, but I'm quite pleased how it has turned out. Fairly hefty, but manageable. Might add some more handles now I've got a better idea of how to lift it solo. Piccies from some recent gigs over the last couple of days included!

Looking good JWhllr, I wish I had the skills and time to tackle something like this.

Can I ask: the gap where the preset keys would be - is that going to be wide enough for a mixer, or iPad? You could squeeze an effects pedal or two there, but I don't think a tablet will fit.

Or am I missing the point (again)?

Cheers, Mike.

ended up not being an incredibly useful side slot, that little gap :P good pickup! Though given the dimensions are already fairly large, I wouldn't want to make it any wider. Holds all my cabling and the expression pedal when in transit, which is fine for me. Good spot to put the keys/phone etc as well.

These custom case builds look nice and would be great at home or in a semi-permanent setup, but there's no way I'd want to carry one to any gig.

My plan is to create a "wrap-around" of three pieces of lightweight wood, or even cardboard, with wood-grain contact paper and attached with velcro. It would fold flat for cartage and weigh very little. From a distance you wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't real if done carefully enough.

Since it's unlikely I'll ever get around to doing this, I pass the idea on to anyone who's interested. You're welcome :-)
