OB6 Module Coming Soon?

Nice. They came out with the P6 module in October, no surprise this would come out a bit earlier since the basic form factor was already designed. I have the OB-6 keyboard and would have considered selling it to get the module, but I love it so much I would probably just end up with a 12-voice machine....!

I get that this was designed to be a desktop module for immediate/live tweakability, but for those who largely like to roll with (e.g., modified) programs for song-specific applications and don't have the available real estate, I wish it could be rack mounted. Since the P6 module can't be rack-mounted, I'm assuming the OB6 module can't be rack-mounted, either.

While both the P6 and OB6 sound fantastic, I am frustrated with both of them: neither has 61 keys and neither can be racked. :(

Rant over, carry on....

Gotta agree... the OB6 sounds great and would be ideal for gigging. With limited stage space I don't want another keyset as I use a MIDI controller to control all synths and romplers offstage. This means rack format not tabletop. I've been wanting something like the Voyetra-8 for a long time. Sure there are VAs but they don't fit the bill.

I'm sure DSI considers carefully the form factor of the instruments they release. Dave would have to, as a mistake could really hurt his business.

Knobby synths make the least sense stuck in a rack, ergonomically speaking.

The desktop is a straightforward placement of the keyboard version's boards into a different chassis. But they would have to be re-engineered to fit in a narrower rack.

Dave did invest in the retooling necessary to do the Poly Evolver in a rack. Perhaps it wasn't enough of a sales success to have been worth it?

Good points Moe, but it's all about me. ;)

Trust me, it was worth it.

I'm surprised some clever person hasn't come up with an enclosure to rack mount these. Maybe the jacks being on the top when turned up 90 degrees would be a problem but still with right angle connectors and leaving a spare rack space? :idk

Exactamente.....

I have a Controller already.

Instead of 0-128 I have 0-256,000,000 (32bit MIDI according to the scientists).

A rack of circuits is all I need.

With a PC Editor of course.

FS1r works great like thise.

Possibly. However if all the pots are mounted on a PCB that's longer than 17", you would be SOL. It would be a labor of love for sure.

What existing OB6 users would like is a small, knobless, featureless box (the size of a shoebox?) that simply provides 6 to 12 additional voices).

Yes. I would love an OB6 rack mount with limited control features, but easily polychained to an OB-6. The PolyEvolver Keyboard and Rack were a thing of joy....

SonicState shows the picture today. Based on the huge blank white space in Geoff's empty post above, it looks like maybe he is including an image as well, but it isn't showing up in Safari on Yosemite.

Aha, the photo in DulceLab's post does finally show up in my browser, at least, and appears to be the same one I saw at SonicState today (along with the other snapshot that leads the posting).

I like that it doesn't have those dizzying narrow band "Oberheim" lines on it, which I found horribly distracting while using the keyboard the few times I tried it out. Almost like a moiree pattern! I "get" the tribute aspect, but maybe more colour contrast or wider spacing could have been used. Anyway, the module skips this.

My recollection is that the modules are roughly $600 to $800 less than the keyboards, throughout the DSI line.

It's a YouTube video (

) of Sound On Sound interviewing Dave Smith Instruments about the OB6 Module at Summer NAMM. I'm not sure why it's not showing up...

Best,

It's difficult to compare a perspective view instead of a head-on view of the panel, but I'm pretty sure the module is 1:1 on par with the keyboard, with the blatant exception of the entire modulation matrix, which is missing in its entirety (including aftertouch control). Probably available via menu diving.

Good, informative, and complete presentation. I didn't even realize Summer NAMM is this week; I thought we were simply seeing advance announcements!

So, it is $700 less than the keyboard, at $2300.

I'm sorely tempted by this one and its been a while since I went snooping around for new hardware. Check out this excellent demo. THAT's the Oberheim sound I know from playing a single SEM for a while and drooling (mentally) over a friend's OB-8. Its also a great 'explanation' for why modulars rock hard, if you have the proper mindset for the time required to make it all fly. I almost feel goofy for grinning this widely to see Dave & Tom bring these classics into Now-Time.

Yowza, that percussive bass reminds me of the OB sound that Prince used in "Sign 'o the Times".

Yeah, Drew Neumann. A badass. Nicest demo I've heard in ages. I'll finally get to hear the OB-6 (module) on Saturday. Can't wait!

This may be an answer to a very difficult question, that is: how to buy an OB-6 without selling my NLA1 ?

The other question is: can i put it on top of my two keyboards somehow (NLA1 and NE5HP) ? OK, this is just an implementation detail.

PS: from the photos in DSI site, all the matrix modulation is there, a bit space compressed, but there.
