Recommendations for Roland RD64 case

Recommended Posts

I now have an RD64 which I bought for portability (wish Yamaha made something like this sized DP - hint!).

I've found a Gator GK-61-Slim case online. The RD64 is just shy of 44 inches wide - this case is 46.5 inches wide. The Gator case depth (on Amazon's site) is 13.5 inches. The RD64 depth is 10 inches.

I'm thinking this will be my best fit. But I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of any better options.

Any better options ? Thanks for input.

You won't want those GK cases to fit exactly anyhow. When you do, it's really hard on the zippers at the corners, and they only last about a year.

Like Sven said, the CB61RL is the "official" bag for the RD64.

I've had one for mine for ~ 1 year, and used it for maybe 20 gigs and 40 practices.

Like many things Roland, it is good, but also a bit quirky, with its strengths also being its weaknesses.

One such quirk - it is is very flimsy, basically a nylon bag with maybe 2 mm of padding throughout (plus one of the "padding bars" that you can put around the edges). So, weakness - not so padded, strength = weight only 2 lbs (that's why I bought it, wanted the keys plus case to still be at the magic 30 lb point, over which things start to feel heavy for me.

Since the RD64 is very well built, and has almost no knobs/levers (and the ones it has are recessed) I'm ok with the flimsiness.

The other quirk is the handle straps - they are super long. Bad thing about that - it feels weird to lift. The good thing - being so long, you can easily rest the keyboard on the floor while holding the straps.

So, basically, I would buy it again, just wanted you to know these caveats.

Full Compass has them (I bought mine for cheaper at B&H Photo, but they no longer seem to carry them)

I used a Nord case for my RD64, can't remember which one (73? 76?), but it fitted perfectly and was well made, not cheap though.

Gig keys: Hammond SKpro, Korg Vox Continental, Crumar Mojo 61, Crumar Mojo Pedals, Nord Lead A1

Not sure why you wouldn't just take Roland's own advice and get their CB61RL?

The optional CB-61L Carrying Bag is a perfect match for the RD-64, providing durable protection when youre on the move.

In a word, "wheels". If I'm not mistaken, the Gator case has wheels on one end. I'm still pondering this, but wheels are a BIG deal. Even if using a hand truck (more clutter to have to carry) there are many times a pair of wheels on one end of the case are very handy. Example: once I've loaded the keyboard into my hatchback (a Honda Fit) - if it needs to be shoved deeper to clear the hatch, wheels are nice for pushing it. It may or may not be a deal breaker/maker , but it is significant.

Thanks for any and all input.

Those GK case with wheels also have a frame and fairly stiff sides. I dropped a Hammond L111 not once, but twice on one of mine (don't ask). Everything in it lived. The case is a bit bowed now, but still works fine. They are heavy, though. Around 20 lbs. I would prefer a bag for stairs.

The Nord Soft Case for 73-key Keyboards fits the Roland RD73 perfectly. Much better than Roland's own CB61RL gigbag.

Did you mean the Nord 73 bag fits the RD64? I'm thinking of buying one of these boards (and the bag).

I use a Gator 73 soft bag for the RD-64. It's not a perfect fit, but I'd rather have a loose case due to previous experiences with tight fitting bags and zippers. (See post from Wes above). I didn't know about the Nord Case. Hmmh. :thu:

You don't want wheels for the RD-64. If you re looking at a complex gig, you might prefer a different action, or a more complete set of sounds. The sweet spot for the RD-64 is when you walk into a casual gig/jam with a couple of stands in one arm and the keyboard in the other. On a good day, you'll beat the singer to the bar.

Oh, my bad! Of course I meant the RD64. There is no RD73. The Nord 73 bag fits the RD64 like a perfectly-sitting suit.
