Pianoteq Update

Markay

Recommended Posts

Version 5.7.1 is now available.

New in this update is Vintage Tines MK11.

MK1 was included in the EP add-on, the MK11 is included for those with EP add-on package.

The MK11 sounds sweet to my ears after a short spin.

Yeah, I had just finished tracking a jazz Rhodes part using UVI Tines Anthology's Mk II as I felt it had better articulation, dynamics, and a warmer/sweeter timbre than typical Mk I libraries and emulations.

I downloaded, installed, and tried the new Pianoteq update last night, but haven't had a chance yet to re-track that one part to see whether Pianoteq is up to the task for realism as opposed to simply being musically pleasing.

Granted, it might be better to play the part again from scratch vs. assuming that using a MIDI part that was tracked to the UVI library is going to translate well, given different assumptions about velocity curves etc.

What I can say already though, is that this new Rhodes Mk II from Pianoteq does seem a big step beyond their previous generation of electromechanical piano emulations. And those were already pretty good.

Installed and had a little play, is a useful alternative to the MKI but doesn't seem radically different. I've had a lot of satisfaction out the MKI model thus far, really does do the job for me on a DI-d Rhodes sound.

The sympathetic resonance needs turning down loads though on some patches!

Great software anyway, happy to be a paying customer since about V2/3. They seem to have a real passion for what they do, always striving for a better model.

I was thinking the same thing when I updated last night. Updates always go without a hitch, and last night a new Rhodes model and 30 new presets, no extra charge. :2thu:

I A/B'd "Mark I Bark" against "Mark II Bark" and could really hear the difference. I own a Mark II 88 Stage and thought they got the overall sound correct. I didn't like the preset "Jazz Rocker". (Think that's what it was called.) Really, really hoping for them to update the 200A.

My biggest beef about the MKII is the fff bark needs to be extended higher as it dies out @ C4.

On a real Rhodes, even on Neo Soul the G4 is where the range fades.

Anyone that plays old RTF like Spain gets disappointed quickly.

Love Modartt though.

I use a tweaked Upright, 200A, Steel Drums and Bells.

But live for a tuned Grand Piano Malmsjo, and Rhodes by Neo Soul.

It's funny you should mention RTF, because it's one of my two covers (completely different styles and instrumentation) of Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy that had me switch to the new UVI Tines Anthology, and then the very same evening the new Pianoteq update comes along but I'm too tired by then to try it for that piece.

I did a bit of research first, because I was confused why Mk II was working better for me on Chick stuff,as it seems he mostly used Mk I like almost everyone else? But of course also there were variants of each, as the UVI Tines Anthology talks about in their PDF manual as they cover every known Rhodes variation.

I just tried the new Pianoteq Rhodes Mk II on the RTF piece, using four different presets with and without personal tweaks.

The 70's Fusion preset in particular, gets quite close to the UVI library.

As with most things, there are pluses and minuses, but after a few trials, I decided that the UVI blends better with other instruments and doesn't get lost when doubled or have any phasiness.

The other advantage of the UVI library is that the upper registers are warmer and more natural, with more bark and better dynamic range overall.

The Pianoteq model has its own advantages, and will probably get used a lot now when I am initially tracking or coming up with song ideas. But I think for the most part it will not work quite as well in final mixes as the UVI.

Clearly it is at least #2 now for Mk II Rhodes. With more tweaking, I might even solve the issues just mentioned (one of which seems to overlap with someone else's critique about the proper cutoff note for the bark response changing).

I made a tweak that works.

Looks like Neo Soul can take a breather for a while.

I need the full warmth of closely voiced clusters in the mid range more than the upper registers.

When I do go high I often am doing licks that only I notice.

Have to say they did a great job, it's just the guys making presets never played a real Rhodes or they would have spotted this immediately.

Most cats gets the chord/middle octaves I think and call it a day.

Just pulled the trigger for the Pianoteq Electric Pianos. The MKII seems to be a big step forward compared to the MKI which never made me pull my credit card. The MKII sounds sweet. I think it's on par with Scarbee or Lounge Lizard at least. And the playability is unmatched. No buyer's remorse. I like it.

The playability is key. I'm more inspired on-the-spot when plugged into Pianoteq, even if I don't always keep it for final tracking.

I never use any of Scarbee's libs anymore, but it took awhile to get to that point... like, last weekend. :-)

I was able to fill out my missing add-ons for almost 50% discount, now that Audio Deluxe carries Pianoteq/Modartt. Picked up the amazing Harp, and the three historical libraries (two piano collections and one harpsichord).

I upgraded from Stage to Standard. No regrets. Good value. More than I expected. The tweaking options are great. My first impression is that for whatever reason most of the presets sound more polished and refined than in the Stage version. Especially the Rhodes sounds can be enhanced a lot by tweaking the parameters which are not available in the Stage version.

Excellent :2thu:

Not having owned Stage I am not aware of what's missing compared with Standard.

With the Standard tweaking options I have been able to get the tone, timbre, resonance and reverb to match or better any of the sampled AP's and EP's I previously used, all in the one easy to use package.

The thing I like about good modelled VST's, when compared to sampled instruments, is that you are not limited to the core baked in sound.
