Any Beach Boys fans here?

Last night I went to see the Brian Wilson 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds tour. An hour of classics in the first half, followed by Pet Sounds in its entirety, then more encores. Set list almost the same as the one here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_Sounds_50th_Anniversary_World_Tour

Fantastic stuff, with an 11-piece band who all sang (except the drummer). Brian's voice isn't the best nowadays, but the lead vocals were shared around the band (which included Al Jardine) and the overall effect was excellent.

Keyboard-spotting? Brian on piano, and two other keys players, one who doubled vibes (I missed their names I'm afraid). I couldn't see the brands of the keys, but they sounded spot on (and in trying to Google for info, I found this very detailed 2004 article - http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct04/articles/smile.htm - which namechecks a certain Mr. Weiser of this parish).

Funnily enough, one of the best "keys" moments wasn't actually keys: instead of faking it with a synth, one of the guitarists doubled as a theremin player. Great to hear the original parts played live on the real thing.

The tour comes to the US soon, and I'd say well worth going to.

I wanna go; saw Brian last year and also on his "Smile" tour about 12 years ago, and on the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary tour 3 or 4 years back. Absolutely love the Beach Boys, always have, and am awestruck by Brian's musical gift and imho incredible contribution to our culture. Anyway yes, his backup band the Wondermints is something to see and hear! Recreate those tough Beach Boys record to a t. I love both the Beach Boys' adventurous "Brother years" era (referring to Brother records that they were on in the late 60's, early 70's) and also their hit-crammed earlier era, it's always been amazing to me how much beauty, invention, how much sheer music is packed into the two and a half minutes of "Warmth of the Sun," "Don't Worry Baby," "Surfer Girl," etc. etc

I saw a Brian Wilson Pet Sounds show with orchestra in Santa Barbara a few years back. Superb.....

Indeed, his voice is a little rough, but he's got a cracking band. PS is such an amazing album, and it's absolutely miraculous that he is the last Wilson brother standing. A must see if you have the opportunity.

I am flying back to Boston at the crack of dawn after a gig in Chicago so that I can go home, rest and bring my 13 yr. old to see him with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall.

I saw the Smile tour - and yes the band is spectacular, and this particular gig will be a once in a lifetime thing.

The keyboardist and musical director in his band, Darian Sahanaja is from a now defunct ( I think ) band called the Wondermints. If you like pop in the vein of Brian/Beatles/The Move, etc. very much worth seeking out their records. Brian never thought that some of this material could even be played live, until the band started surprising him with deep cuts at rehearsals, and he eventually decided to finish and tour Smile, and now this last tour ever of Pet Sounds.

Oh, and if you haven't seen the Pet Sounds era biopic Love and Mercy, a must watch if you're a fan, and worth seeing if you're not.

Saw him a few years back on the Smile tour when we were in the UK. My buddy was tour producer, so we got seats immediately next to his grumpy wife and kids. It didn't matter, it was a moment.

Brian brings as much game as he can, given the circumstances, but -- like others -- I'm totally blown away by the band. So many amazing musicians in one place, playing great music. Definitely worth seeing.

On a related topic, go see The Wrecking Crew. There you will learn that most of the Beach Boys recorded work was not played by The Beach Boys at all...

Saw this tour on the 29th March at Sydney Opera House

My takeaway from this superb concert.

Incredible vocal harmonies, best I have ever heard, 9 voices intertwined - bit like Spector's wall of sound done right.

Best ever performance by 2 keyboard players, 3 if you count Brian on piano. Orchestral like arrangements by MD Darian Sahanaja.

Brian seemed relaxed and nailed the lyrics. A miracle given the back story.

There is something for everyone in this show, Beach Boy lover or not.

Purchased tickets thanks to Mark Zeger's recommendation late last year.

Wrecking Crew. I love that film. It's nice to see the players who can deliver what the producers want on the spot. I really enjoyed Glen Campbell, who made a 'mistake' on a take that everybody liked and played, too. Many of the groups just took too long to make a record because of chops,
"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

I would add that Al Jardine is (still) an excellent singer as well, and a great addition to this lineup. He's got great institutional memory on how they've done the songs over the years. I'm glad to see they've mended whatever fences existed..

I'm a Pet Sounds freak. One of the first albums I ever had and still in my top 5 faves. I won't make it to the Boston shows for various uninteresting reasons, but I will have a party in my media center with these two live DVDs of Brian and brilliant band. For those who cannot make the live shows, get these DVDs. I've had both for a number of years...both fantastic. One-Pet Sounds specific---the other-everything.

Beethree, I may be a few years behind on this, but otherwise (at least about 10 years ago), the Wondermints were not defunct but rather still using that name when working as Brian's backup band.

I have the boxed set from 1993. Too bad it couldn't have been updated but it's amazing. Brian Wilson knows how to get the most out of the other band members. He really knows what's going on even if he doesn't seem all there. My guitarist knows everything about them and wrote a forward to a novel about them. It's interesting stuff.

For those so inclined, the definitive Beach Boys book,The Nearest Faraway Place by the late Timothy White (he of Musician Magazine and Billboard) is an absolute must read..

Oh man I love these guys. Getting to contribute a little something to the SMiLE album was an absolute treat. (Now piano #13 in the PC3/PC3K set I believe.) Darian is a wonderful dude and one hell of an amazing musician.

Side note - when I went to the premiere I got seated next to Al Kooper, which made the evening twice as cool.

Now THAT is really cool! How is Al's health?
