Laney Ironheart?

Hey All -

I'm usually in the keyboards section, but I do stray over here once and a while as I also play guitar.

So I'm going back to having a combo amp (not connecting with my 11 rack), looking at tubed in the 15w - 30w range with the ability to attenuate being a good thing. A friend of mine recommended the Laney Cub, which just about fits the bill, but I seem to want two channels...old habits. Not looking to break the bank as guitar is my second instrument, shooting for $300 - $700, and the lighter the better. Give me the world for $500 damn it!

Anyhow, anyone here familiar with the Laney Ironheart (IRT30-112)? Other suggestions?

Thanks!

I suppose type of music I play, could be useful. I lean towards rock on guitar (Beatles, Stones, to Cheap Trick to Green Day as a guilty pleasure). So versatility is key. I don't really play any metal. One thing that gives me pause with the Laney, is that it seems to be metal oriented. Though everything I've read indicates it's very flexible.

That's the very site I have a 15% coupon for.

I've traditionally been a Fender amp user, are you suggesting the HRD 112, or is that what you use? Or yes to both? ;-)

My problem is that most of these options aren't available to try in person without driving 5+hours. I'm in a small college town and the Spokane GC has pretty limited options on the floor.

I like the Laney as it has 30 watts RMS [adjustable] down to 5 or less, a DI for going to the PA, reverb, etc. and if you can get 15% off it would be very much worth a try and worth a road trip IMHO. They both use a couple of 6L6 power tubes which I like. I like the Laney features and controls in the MF ad. I would have to hear the reverb and pick them both up side by side for weight before purchasing. A used HRD 112 runs about $400 and weighs about 45lbs so I think it would be a good comparable. I have a Hot Rod 410 DeVille...

You're welcome. I forgot to mention that with the Laney, you would not have to buy the attenuator but you probably already figured this out. Looks like you can play at low volumes and still get your OD/Distortion and gain sounds...looks pretty cool! :thu:

That looks like a great amp. I like the looks and capabilities of the thing, all inclusive at a reasonable price. Go to Guitar Center and try one out before you pull the trigger on an amp....

I have a Hot Rod Deluxe but the gain channel is relatively useless, as the HRD has only one set of EQ's used for both channels. Set the clean tones for what you want and stomp on the switch and it gets real treble-ee and fizzy, until you turn it way up and it is freakin loud at those volumes. I have to use a stomp for overdrive. Great clean tones though.

Since I only play acoustic and know next to NOTHING about the amp market, I confess with "hat in hand" that at first I thought this was a thread about possibly some female metal guitarist!

I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

Well, the closest store that had one in stock was a 5 hour drive away, so I ordered one with the 15% coupon, and they're pretty good with returns, so fingers crossed. Gets here tomorrow, but as it's a birthday present, I'm not supposed to open it until June 11...argh. Seems like I have solid grounds to test it out tomorrow to make sure I like it though! ;-)

I'm as anxious as you are to find out how you like it! I would always tell my wife we can wrap it for my birthday or Christmas etc. present, but I have to check it out under the return policy or I can't send it back if there are any problems. She does not read this forum stuff or I would never admit this here. But, it has always worked for at least a day or two for a quick preview LOL! If not, I guess we can wait till June 11th...

I got 20 minutes alone with Ms. Ironheart on Thursday, to make sure she functioned correctly. It wasn't enough time! I wanted more, so much more. But sadly, she's sent away until 6/11!

But in those 20 minutes:

The sweep-able attenuator is great, was mostly in the 1 - 10 watt range for the test. Amazing what a couple watts can do and sound like. Ms. Ironheart can really crank it out.

I briefly experimented with the various level of crunchiness she can put out, I was very impressed. I don't think I'll need an OD pedal, which is my preference

Clean channel was powerful and fits the bill.

Built in digital reverb I'll need to mess with some more, didn't get enough time with it.

Channel switch that came with the amp is impressively solid.

Initial bottom line, you can sculpt your tone pretty extensively, and I like what I hear so far. I like to keep things pretty simple, so just a Delay and Wah are probably all I'll add to the chain. I've also reaffirmed that I like amps with 3 channels.

I look forward to putting it more through the paces and checking out the DI and Aux in.

To be continued!
