OT: HAL Got Me Again!!!

Markyboard

Recommended Posts

I stepped away from my computer for no more than 30 minutes last night. When I came back it was updating me to Win 10. The only thing I knowingly did yesterday besides music related stuff on Reaper and the internet was clicking yes to itunes updates. I did not allow rebooting of my computer after the updates were installed and so the notification to do so hung out there for quite some time. I can't imagine this would have anything to do with updating me to Win 10.

Oh well, guess I'll see how Win 10 does with my Audio stuff and everything else. With a big WTF to start my day.

I'm now using Windows 10 on most of my computers without issue. It is actually really nice if you have a touch screen.

The true evil is software is JAVA. For 3 days my staff has been fighting a wave of JAVA problems first caused by our software vendor pushing an update that changed the required version of JAVA, and continued by JAVA's continuing push to trick users into installing the latest version. Made even worse by Sun trying to push 64 bit versions to 64 bit operating systems, and our software only working with the 32 bit version.

How long does the update take to execute?

That last two that I did was an HP TouchSmart notebook and a gaming desktop. Get the process started and then leave it. It will reboot a few times in the process and keep going. Never had any issues with either. I'm guessing that each took about an hour. Not exactly sure how long because I checked on them periodically while they were updating and was not in the room when they finished. The longest part for me used to be the download. I finally got smart and downloaded an update file and wrote it to DVD. That speeded it up a lot.

I'm guessing my update also took about an hour. i went to bed at about 75% complete and this morning all was complete. So far it looks and operates pretty much the same. Surprisingly I didn't have to do anything as far as updating my RME audio drivers. Receiving MIDI through my MTP-Avs and directly over USB but looks like MIDI not getting back out. Off to troubleshoot.

The Win10 auto update notification can be somewhat subtle if you're used to clicking through dialog boxes without paying close attention (like we all do...I mean, c'mon...).

It's sort of telemarketer-level mind-jam: "hey, we noticed you aren't running Windows 10 but we downloaded it anyway and will update unless you tell us otherwise ISTHATOKAYWITHYOUGREATTHANKSBYE!"

For me it's been a smoother user experience than Win7 and the confused heap that was Win8, but I'm not running niche stuff.

You are a braver man than I. I run an ancient version of iTunes - better the devil you know.

The last laptop with windows I had would ask me several times over several days if I wanted to update, and then eventually go, "Look we're done. You are updating NOW mister!" and throw me off the computer to execute the update, usually when I was in the middle of something important (of course, not backed up yet) Never again. Never.

Most of my video and audio programs are niche stuff.

I have Windows 7, so I guess the hostile take-over could happen any time? So help me if it auto updates during one of my live radio broadcasts, I will head my butt right back over to Seattle and have at it face to face with Bill Gates personally.

My former radio partner used to have a cat that would type in the show chat room. Never could understand what the cat was typing, but then I guess it was in Catonese?

I stayed with XP for many years, skipped Shitsa and then went to Win 7 which has been very good to me since. Today I'm on Win 10. Just had my first crash, something about my RME audio driver I think. Reaper was open but I was just typing on this forum when my system went ....catatonic. :rimshot:

Linda, I can tell you it happened to me like that also, just like Mark described. I was planning on staying on Windows 7 but Microsoft had a different plan. Fortunately, I haven't had any problems, it's been about 3 weeks now.

My 7 got snatched up into the 10 update, I pulled the plug and dumped the battery. Called Microsoft and explained I did not want Win 10 ever, we did a shared session and in about 15 minutes, they pulled all that auto load Win 10 stuff. Been over a month now and happy with the 7; no sign of any auto update to 10 anymore. If I want 10 sometime in the future I would have to pay for it as the "free" offer is going away sometime soon. Good luck all!

I'm still using Cubase 6.5. I wish the "free" Windows 10 update came with a Steinberg coupon for the $311.00 CDN that it's going to cost me to update to a version of Cubase that DOES work with that OS.

Although I don't like the pushed upgrade, Win 10 actually works quite nicely. For computer guys, there are some nice changes, like maturation of the DOS prompt (and upcoming BASH shell). I actually upgraded to it intentionally about a month ago, both at work and at home.

Finale and all other software I have works fine.

Microsoft is gonna continue to update it, whereas good old Win 7 (and lousy, unloveable Win 8) will have support dropped as soon as Microsoft can relieve themselves of 'em.

To me the downside is that you can't easily say "Freeze the OS at this level"; They have set it so you can't really prevent an upgrade if they want to do so. The other downside is that it's ugly, with a least-common-demoninator display aesthetic. Gone are rounded corners sculpted menu bars, and the like; replaced with monochrome boxy windows reminiscent of Windows 2.0.

I upgraded mine from Win 8.1 intentionally right after it became available, and have had no issues with it. I waited a while to upgrade my wife's machine from Win 7, but the upgrade on that went just as smoothly.

As far as JAVA Upgrade, NEVER!! I've worked in situations where the users would get the JAVA upgrade warning, and they would be told Do Not Try The Upgrade... Has not been approved.

A small utility called GWX Control Panel (single executable file) obtained GWX_Control_Panel has been working on Windows 7 and 8.1 computers that I do not want to change to Windows 10.

My newer DAW (Win 7) did get converted. Some music programs were already not working (due to adding some additional programs that upset the ASIO Audio), some others also quit, so I restored the computer to Windows 7. It is noteworthy that my eMu 1820M DID continue to work. I have been using the Mac for music lately and forgotten just how aggravating Windows can be to get ASIO working consistently.

HP Netbook - 10 was OK for three weeks, then an update resulted in explorer.exe crashing over and over. Two computers that will stay on 8.1 because they are both used with HDTV tuners as DVRs.

Linda and others- Too late for me but check this out to avoid Windows 10.

Never 10

No it isn't- remove it. It has an uninstall feature that will pit it back to your previous OS.
