Dennyf
Dammit, I knew this "lawless" nature of the internet would eventually lead to the ruination of us all if steps weren't taken. Here's just one more example. When are y'all gonna understand that the vast majority of us want our lives flavor-, spice-, surprise-, risk-, and interest-free? Don't make me think for myself now! Stephen Fortner
I'm no prude. I've posted dirty jokes on these forums myself. But ultimately, Musicplayer is supposed to be a work-friendly and kid-friendly website. This is a model online community in so many ways, and it's FREE thanks to the uncompensated work of our moderators and the good faith of a whole lot of people who feel bottom-line pressure as part of their everyday job. Scenario: High schoolers surfing the Forums in school library. Reading about Line 6 guitar amps, Korg Tritons, and DJing. R- or X-rated avatar comes up. Kids giggle. Knee-jerk parent or teacher or school official sees it from a distance, and the next thing you know, the school's proxy server blocks Musicplayer.com. There's a handful of potentially gear-buying young people that won't be surfing our site anymore, because the parents are likely to prohibit them from viewing it at home, too. This is how an advertiser thinks, because they have to. This kind of thing could potentially eat our lunch. I'm extremely pro-freedom, and to that end, observe that we are all free to go to the well-marked adult sites and chat rooms where this sort of thing is expected if we want. doc taz
While I've been known to use some suggestive poses of ladies as avatars, rest assured, I've never used anything remotely pornographic. Sexy, yes, but no porn. In fact, if you grab the base URL for my avatar, and read the bio of the latest model I'm using, she doesn't do porn, either. But at the same time, I think people shouldn't be too critical of others using artistically challenging images, unless it's blatantly designed to be prurient, obscene or otherwise controversial. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page

Sad Example
Ok, It's clear that I'm the reason this thread was started, so I'm trying to appease the masses by selecting a more work friendly avatar. Lee Flier
Ya know... it always cracks me up the way these kinds of arguments go. "I can use boobs/dildos in my avatar if I want to, and if you tell me not to, it's censorship!" "Yeah, and what's wrong with boobs anyway, you guys are all a bunch of prudes if you're offended by that!" "Just turn off your avatars!" "We're artists, we're SUPPOSED to be controversial and shocking!" And of course, the inevitable "Nobody says you have the right to go through life without being offended!" Well... 1) Just because no one is "censoring" you doesn't mean it would kill you to show some class every now and then. 2) There's nothing at all wrong with boobs or penises, but there's likely something wrong with people who'd like to see them displayed publicly at every possible turn. It's obviously either a sign of repression, an attention getting device or a marketing ploy, or all of the above, and I'm getting pretty tired of it. 3) Saying to just turn off avatars is not really addressing any of this, it's just sweeping it under the rug, as it were. 4) This whole business of trying to be more shocking and controversial than the next person wears very thin anymore, and is really not any kind of artistic statement, it's just boring and tiresome. What's really shocking and cutting edge nowadays is when people actually try to create beauty and subtlety and wonder in the world. Sure does make people uncomfortable, too. They tend to get really mad when you suggest such a thing.

They tend to get really mad when you suggest such a thing. This is what I tell people when I explain my tastes in the more extreme areas of rock music (Death metal, etc). A lot of them don't understand that most of it is not meant to be taken seriously, and if you do, you're the one that's demented. Some folks can't laugh at themselves without feeling offended. That's just sad. You'd be surprised to know how many guys in the extreme metal biz are just good natured fellas and gals in general, regardless of our tastes in the darker areas of art. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
Lee Flier
I agree Taz, in fact I've said the same thing on these forums more than once (that I know a lot of metal dudes who are very kind, funny folks, and you seem to be one of those yourself). It's not that I can't appreciate black humor, or dirty jokes. I'm just tired of it - not black humor or dirty jokes, but people making a point of saying or doing "controversial" things in any situation and at every turn, like Janet Jackson's boob. It's like a joke that's been told too many times, to the point where it seems to reflect a bigger problem with the people who are telling the joke. Let me put it this way... I've been to a GWAR show and I thought it was funny as hell, but I wouldn't use a picture from the show as my avatar. And suppose I was a death metal enthusiast and (on a site OTHER than one explicitly for death metal fans) half my posts featured images of death, or quoted really graphic lyrics from death metal songs, and obviously tried to be as outrageous as possible. Then when people got sick of it and complained, my defense was, "Hey, it's supposed to be FUNNY! Why are you so OFFENDED!" That's something that really says more about the poster than the so-called offensive or humorous content.

Jeebus
I don't think a dildo or bouncing boobs are a big deal, as long as the nipples are covered. My current favorite avatar is that of "rocksynthman", who seems to post rather frequently on the bass forum. It too, is causing a small uproar among the forumers over there. Base
I think you guys should elect Lee as your president this year!!! Censorship does generally suck, but I agree that a little responsibility will go a long way. I like browsing these forums at work (I do so more than I actually WORK!!! Please don't take that away from me!!!), and until seeing the picture in the guitar forum last night (which will haunt me for the rest of my days, drumngroove guy, you need to see a therapist ) I don't think I've seen anything in here that would really prompt me to hide what I was looking at (tho the dildo avatar was a little close to the mark). BTW, you have people over there suing over the trauma of seeing Janet Jackson's boob, how much can those of us that saw the guitar forum pic sue for??? "I" don't think it's a big deal to run children over in the street. It's an art form, in fact. But who cares what I think? The censors are trying to stop my freedom of personal expression. Apparently, the children and their parents don't have any appreciation of my creativity. I think my rights are being violated. Call the ACLU. So, Jeebs, your specific "it's cool as long as there are no nipples" rule may not be applicable to everyone. And, personally, I don't really get too much enjoyment out of seeing penises, be they plastic or flesh-and-blood. The boobs in your avatar are nothing if not enticing, Jeebs. And the avatar "rocksynthman" is using is definitely hot, IMHO. But if I want "hot", I have so many places on the Internet to get it. I don't require it here. And some people may even be bothered by it. fantasticsound
I guess part of it goes back to an old bit of wisdom that says the overtly sexual and profane are often employed as entertainment by those who are otherwise uninspired. Otherwise, it's easy yet unimaginative to post something others find titilating or offensive. I don't find this creed to be universal, but it stands up a majority of the time. Anyone can get a reaction by swearing. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised, Jeebus. I don't know if your bowling avatars are pics of you, but they were creative and interesting. Much better IMO, then the jiggling chest, regardless of whether one takes offense at the latter. {edit:}I forgot to comment on this, earlier: Originally posted by Sal: And I agree with what Lee posted also.
