True. They're trolling because you answered Dylan with an unrelated, sarcastic comment, then play semantic games about professionalism. If you can't figure out what DJ Wayne or Dylan meant you could ask them to clarify. Instead, you turned a legitimate concern into a chance to play class clown. And elicited exactly the response you desired when DJ Wayne suggested a connection between your attempt at humor and the stereotypical Beavis and Butthead fan. Enticed him to start a mini flame war, so you could believe you're on even moral ground with him.

If you are afraid of getting caught doing something you shouldn't at work, then don't do what you aren't supposed to. Don't shift that burden onto the rest of us.

Whoa! Where did I or anyone say or insinuate we were doing something we shouldn't at work by posting here?? I sincerely hope you treat your friends with more respect than you do the people here. That's all Dylan asked for. Use a little common sense that there ARE people in businesses who contribute here as well as some children. I would suggest that if you were speaking to these people in their offices you would have a bit more respect.

Thread titles?? Come on man, what are we in kindergarten here?

My posts regarding porn being potentially on topic are not only sincere, but clearly accurate IMO.

As Stephen clearly illustrated, you can espouse open attitudes about sexual or other content, whether it's on or off topic, and not create a problem. Threads come and go. But when an avatar (and your avatars, to my memory, have never fallen into this category anyway) is sexually or violently explicit, and is posted everywhere you post, that crosses the line, IMO, a lot quicker than a single comment or image.

In the end it's about respect. You've made it crystal clear that you have no respect for others who politely request that sexually explicit images be kept to a minimum or, preferably, kept out completely from the forae.

Craig may or may not get rid of some of the avatars for this reason, but as he's made perfectly clear on so many occasions, it's up to us to self police, both because he can't be everywhere with limited resources and because this IS a community.

So before you reply with snappy comebacks to legitimate concerns, why not treat people here with some respect?

No... you just want to troll. If you think your comments will hurt my feelings you haven't been listening. That's not surprising, though. Just sad.

I can understand these comments aimed at DJ Wayne. Wayne, now you're acting like one half of a useless flame war and throwing out ridiculous threats at Sal. Not to mention feeding the troll.

Sal, pal...you know I'm a serious anti-censorship proponent, blah blah blah. I think you're on the wrong side of this particular fence, though, bud.

I'm not gonna get too specific here. You're just looking at your argument without some perspective.

- The folks who look at the forums are a big cross-section of society (duh). There are indeed pretty young kids, folks of religious persuasion and others who are indeed offended (or embarrassed, or feel like they don't belong here) by stuff like dildo avatars.

- Am I one of those people? No. Are you? No. Is Jeebus? Hell no. But we're all smart enough to know that just because we aren't, some others may be.

- Now comes the decision whether to be cool about things or not. You may choose not; I choose yes. I think that musicians, from orchestral cellists through grindcore metal guitarists, shouldn't feel uncomfortable here through the desires of a few individuals.

But that's just what I think. I don't think anyone needs to be kicked off the forum (that's just damn silly), and if the avatars bother Craig (which they might), the person using them will be told as such.

Either way, it's as cool for Dylan and Neil to voice their feelings on this matter as it is for you or Bunny to defend the position. One way or the other, none of you have large fake penises in your avatars, so this is just a philosophic discussion anyway. ;)

- Jeff

Remember, guys, some perverted maniac could log in here and post all kinds of twisted porn and stuff at any time. It would take anywhere from five minutes to five hours or more for a moderator/administrator to come and delete the posts. This site is not necessarily work-safe of family-oriented by its very nature.

Be careful where you are when you open this forum. :thu:

The answer is to turn off avatars, which I offered in the, what, second or third response to this thread? ;)

All the rest of this is just discussion and joking around, and obviously I am not the one posting pics of dildos in the first place.

There is one person in this thread in particular who needs to get a sense of humor

OK, as you were.

This is true. and I've seen it happen where image posting gets so abused, it had to be stopped, and a completely new forum format installed, where no images were permitted. Do you really want that to happen here ??

I'm not threatening anybody, just trying to share past experiences with you guys. Abuse the image posting privleges, and sooner or later, there will be none. Happens every time.

Thanks to all that have shed some light on their feelings about this. Again, the last thing I want to do single anyone person out here or preach whats kosher and whats not. But like it or not, this is a public forum, and Craig is cool enough to let us all say and do pretty much whatever we want without acting like a policeman. Im no angel by any means and I dont intend to come off that way. Believe it or not, I have no problem with people posting nudity or other questionable items as long as the thread has a warning or some type of heads up. Anywho, lets not get too riled up over this issue. If the general concensus is thats its not a problem having risky avatars then Ill shut my hole and just turn off viewing avatars. But Ill be a little bummed not being able to enjoy the 99.9% of avatars that are OK to look at for the masses.

Thanks,

Dylan

I agree 100% with Dylan. There are plenty of avatars to be used without putting dildos up there. I would say the bouncing breasts could be okay, if only because the nipples are covered. But yeah, have a little consideration. I, for one, appreciate peoples' right to post near anything, but post a link with a disclaimer "not work friendly". The same goes for joke email images. If you wouldn't see it on a garden-variety TV station, put a disclaimer on it so we won't inadvertently open it at work.

Why should we turn off all avatars when only 1 or 2 out of 100 could cause problems? And Sal, yours aren't to be construed as offensive...yours are usually fine. There are enough humorous and creative things you can do with avatars without being obscene.

djwayne, relax. Sal's just messing with you, seeing how far he can push you.

But Sal, if you haven't seen the avatars, it's a little naive to argue that they are NOT "over the line." I'm allowed to surf the net as much as I want at work, but even I have noticed the past month or so that the avatars are getting to the point that I quickly forum posts to hide dildo's or bouncing breasts. If it's a gag for a bit, it's funny, but it's gotten to the point that the images themselves aren't enough, and now the profile names are getting changed to "make a point."

Dylan, I think that if you explained to those offended that "some jerk was trying to be silly" and you had no idea that this thing was allowed in a g-rated (they don't know any better :P ) site, they'd understand...though you'd probably have to kiss visiting the forums at work goodbye...

Actually there's another thing too - besides djwayne gettin extra grumpy, hehe - that stuff gets downloaded as a jpeg on your computer. So if you've just viewed a thread that has 'R' rated stuff in it you might want to clean up your temp internet files periodically in IE or whatever you use.

Excellent point Kylen.

And, if someone has a company like the one I work for, that has the option to clear the history disabled, along with other IE options, they could be in a world of hurt unless they know where to find the history file and clear it manually now and again.

If you work in a place where sensitive images could cause a problem, turn avatars off, if you have kids, do likewise. How hard is that?

Avatars aren't the crowning glory of the SSS, they're just a bunch of silly pictures! Trust me, you won't miss out on a great deal.

Where I work, people regularly post 'humourous' pictures to the 50+ employees, including the MD. These have featured pierced penises, guys hammering nailed through thier dicks, 'hilarious' pics of female genitalia with tattoos made so the pic looks like a butterfly, movies of horrific accidents, etc.

That's my workplace. A dildo barely raises an eyebrow. A former collegue just to host a raunchy late night show so the office was adorned with dildos, vibrators, handcuffs and condoms which were given away as prizes on air.

If your workplace differs, you'd be stupid to have any avatars on display IMO. It's the internot and you never know 100% what you're going to get when you open a thread ... so if anything pops up which gets you into trouble then you really have no one to blame but yourself.

Once again with feeling: It's the internet! self-censorship can save you your job.

I don't have an avatar, and they are turned off in my profile.

If and when I check in from another machine, the forums are SCREAMING loud with all kinds of shit. This means I am unable and unwilling to check in from ...maybe 40% (or more) of myu clients. No big deal

Yes, it's a bunch of musicians herehanging loose, so I never complain, as retarded as I think avatars (in general) are. I've never had a problem conveying my thoughts, fears and ideas - sans avatars, nor have I felt need for an avatar or picture to undertand a post.

Fact is, I don't like every thing my mom, or wife, or kids do. But I get along with them just fine. So it is that I can get along with the majority here - avatar or no avatar.

For those who find that avatars border on the risque or offensive, be judicious in where you log on to the forums. It is easier to control what you can, than to attempt to contain what you cannot.

For those who see this place as a complete free for all...irrespective of who you are - Craig, Sal, Neil - whomever. All those blinky pictures may be cool, and may convey how you feel, or may display your skilz...for what end?

The user name and avatar in question is:

"spackled with jism" (or something like that)

http://www.silkempire.com/item_pictures/Product/DJ027081.jpg

And the first time I saw it, I knew it would start a shitstorm.

And though I found it amusing, I can see where it would be offensive to most.

I won't be annoyed unless it results in Jeebus having to change his. :)

And has anybody noticed that everybody here is divided by political lines? (just like I've said a million times)

P.S. The featured dildo is an actual product for sale at...

...in case anybody is interested. :)

I'm pretty much agree with Drew's comments. Mainly because avatars make the forum pages load a LOT slower.

But, it's a little area that expressive people can express themselves.

The ones I enjoy most are the ones that are actual pictures of the person posting. Griff, cherri, and more....those are the best.

Do NOT, and I mean DO NOT open the thread on the guitar forum titled "If Jimi Lived"....

If you thought the dildo was bad....

I swear to God you will be scarred for life if you scan the second page of that thread.
